  • Question
I have a fear of bugs. What should I do if there are ants crawling all over the tree, or cobwebs everywhere?
    Community Answer
If you see bugs, don't climb the tree. If you absolutely must climb the tree, you'll just have to take a deep breath and ignore the bugs.
  • Question
    What equipment do we need?
    Community Answer
Some helpful gear would be good shoes with traction, gloves, and clothing that protects you from getting scratched. Many people climb trees without any of those things, however, so they aren't a requirement.
  • Question
What shoes do I wear to avoid injuries to the ankles and feet?
    Community Answer
The best shoes to wear are good quality trainers with grips on the soles. I would recommend investing in some quality shoes if you are thinking about climbing often.
  • Question
I don't have any equipment but I really want to climb this oak tree. Is it possible?

  • Question
Is it safe to climb in the winter with all the snow if I am a really good climber?
    Community Answer
Probably not. I would stay off the trees. If you choose to try it, just make sure you have the proper equipment, like harnesses and ropes. Also make sure that you can move freely in your coat, as most bulky coats restrict your movements. I don't recommend free climbing, however.
  • Question
Do I need to have a soft mat under the tree in case I fall?
    Community Answer
You don't need to have a soft mat, but it would be a good idea, especially if you're new to tree climbing. You could also pad the ground with pillows and blankets.
  • Question
What should I do if there's a crunching noise?
    Community Answer
Try to immediately find another branch that you know you can trust with your weight. It is always good to be prepared, so try to be looking around for good back up branches while you climb. If there are no other branches around, then you can try to wrap your arms around the tree and tuck in your knees like a frog, or you could try to put your feet down sideways to help you not fall immediately. Either way, if that happens, it's probably best to avoid climbing that tree again in the future.
  • Question
What if there is nothing to put my foot on to help me ascend my way up the tree?
    Community Answer
As long as you can reach the lowest branch, you'll be fine, but if you can't, and you're absolutely sure you have a good sense of balance and quick reflexes, try wrapping your arm around the trunk and putting your foot on the side. Then, using your foot to push up and away from the trunk, try to either grab the closest branch with both hands, or put one arm on the trunk and one arm on the branch. If you happen to miss the branch, throw your arms down and grasp the branch you were previously on or hug the trunk.

  • Question

Start small, and don’t go higher than you’re comfortable with on the first time. Over time, gradually increase the height you climb to.
  • Question
How do I know if the branch will support my weight?
    MelaniaJ
    Community Answer
A good way to check if a branch can support your weight is to compare it against your arm. Typically, if it's smaller than your bicep, it cannot hold your weight. If it's larger than your bicep, it probably can — but test it first before putting your weight on it.
