Yes, this should prevent the rhizomes from growing outward but shouldn't inhibit vertical growth.

You can unearth the bamboo. You can also use herbicide on young spouts or stump remover on roots.
  • Question
Can I use bamboo as a barrier or wall in a small area?
    Community Answer
Myan emperors used it to block out tigers on their Thai estates while travelling when congress was in recess for millennia...so yeah, I would think so.
  • Question
Would plastic/rubber trugs work as a bamboo barrier, and if so, what is the minimum size/depth and drainage?
    Community Answer
No. The bamboo will grow through the plastic drainage holes, and the plastic will crack and break in a few years, allowing the bamboo to escape. Use metal or clay containers. Provide good drainage and a good, thick layer of permeable barrier between the roots and the container drainage holes (rocks or sand). Bamboo likes water, so making very small drainage holes on your aluminum metal container is best.
  • Question
If a barrier stops bamboo from growing in one direction, which way is it then likely to spread?
    Community Answer
The other three directions. Bamboo will spread like wildfire. If you make a barrier on one side it will grow in the directions you did not put a barrier.
  • Question
Can I kill bamboo with boiling water?
    Community Answer
No Boiling water will not penetrate deep enough into the ground to kill bamboo at its source, the root.
  • Question
Will cutting off the new shoots of my clumping bamboo stop it from growing leaves?
    Community Answer
The rest of the bamboo will cycle normal leaf growth if new shoots are pruned.
