Coconut oil will help keep your hair silky and smooth so it's easier to comb through. Leave it in your hair for 20 minutes or overnight to condition it.
  • Question
I haven't brushed my hair in many weeks, and it really hurts when I attempt to brush it. What can I do?
    Community Answer
First, apply coconut oil to your hair and let sit for 20 minutes. Put on a shower cap to stop oil from getting everywhere (optional). Then, slow and gently brush your hair. Once you have gotten some knots out, rinse with warm water, and then shampoo and condition. Next, dry hair and get a spray bottle and fill it with water. Slowly brush your hair while spraying water every few brush strokes, then brush out any remaining knots.
  • Question
What do I do if I have one huge knot in the back and I can't separate it into 4 parts?
    Community Answer
Apply as much conditioner as you can and try to comb it very slowly.
  • Question
Would coconut oil do instead of a conditioner?
    Community Answer
Yes, I have tried it and it worked well. It's a good natural substitute.
  • Question
Would this method work on hair that is very frizzy and curly?
    Community Answer
Yes, it should work on curly or frizzy hair.
  • Question
How do I untangle my hair with only a brush?
    Community Answer
Start at the front, and separate the hair into different sections. To detangle without pain, hold the top of the section you're working on, and brush with strong, swift strokes.
  • Question
How do I detangle large knots from the back of my head without pain?
    Community Answer
Try gently untangling your hair with a comb, not a brush. If that's not working, apply a lot of conditioner on your hair and leave it. Wash your hair well. Comb it when it's still wet, this will reduce the pain, and then blow dry it. Next, apply a generous amount of any hair oil you have onto your hair and leave it in for a while, then comb it. Make sure you comb your hair daily to reduce the chance of this happening again.

  • Question
What if I have "natural" hair, such as an Afro?
    Community Answer
Divide it into four sections and apply a generous amount of hair oil and leave in. Make sure you cover every section for the best results. Next, comb every single piece of hair from the roots, applying more oil if dry. Tie up your hair into 4 buns for more waviness and smoothness. Repeat this process every day for a week.
  • Question
If I have a huge knotted clump of hair and I'm not allowed to wet it, how do I get it out?
    Community Answer
Divide your hair into four sections. Apply a generous amount of oil to your hair and leave it in. Gently comb your hair and you'll notice the results. Tie your hair into a bun for extra waviness and smoothness.
  • Question
Does this work with African-American hair?
    Community Answer
Every type of hair is different. Some of the things girls with straight do might not work for your hair. Try add conditioner and water in a spray bottle and spray that all over your hair and start brushing or combing it (I would suggest combing, because brushing may make your hair frizzier and puffier than it already is).
  • Question
What should I use on my slightly wavy hair if I don't want it to get oily?
    Community Answer
Wash twice a week. If you do it too often, it will become more oily or you could use a not so rich coconut shampoo and conditioner.
  • Question
How do I stop my hair from getting tangled?
    Community Answer
Follow the methods in Avoid Tangled Hair .
  • Question
What should I do if my hair is full of knots and I can't divide them and I can't get a comb through it?
    Community Answer
Apply leave-in conditioner or coconut oil. This should soften it a bit. Then divide the hair slowly with your hands. A comb can be very painful but with your hands, you'll know when to add force or reduce it.
  • Question
How long will it take to detangle hair with a brush?
    Community Answer
Depending upon hair length and the number/tightness of knots, it can take about 5 minutes to detangle 4-5 knots. It is best to detangle patiently and not rush things. If it is really bad and painful, take breaks.
  • Question
What if I have a huge knot in the back and I can’t separate it into four parts and it hurts when I brush it and I’ve already tried the coconut oil?
    Community Answer
Gently separate it with your hands. Run your fingers through the hair till you reach the knot and start removing single hair strands. It will be a slow process but it is better than rushing and hurting yourself.
  • Question
What if my hair is matted to the roots of my head and I can't separate it and I don't have detangling spray?
    Community Answer
The best thing to do is grab a chunk of hair as close to the root as you can, and start brushing from the bottom up. Make sure when you're grabbing your hair, to hold it as hard as you can, so when you're brushing out your hair, it won't hurt as much. Once you have brushed out the hair you're holding, you will have to brush out the hair closest to the scalp. Perhaps put some water on it, but the scalp will hurt somewhat when you are brushing it because you aren't applying pressure to it. Repeat this all around your head until all of your hair is brushed out. Putting conditioner in your hair will also help this process.
