I am trying to recover favorites from a hard drive. Is there a folder or file that has the favorites? I cannot log in and export.

How should I save my bookmarks so I can do a system restore on my device, if I don't own any other devices?

You can only export your bookmark throught your Gmail account. Just log in and sync your bookmark, then log in on any other device. It will ask to upload previously recorded bookmarks from your gmail account.

HTML is html even if you add Firefox in front. There might be some Firefox-related stuff in the file, but as long as it has html-format, it should open in any browser. Just save your Firefox-variant, and open it in Chrome.

How do I export my bookmarks as one flat list/file without retaining all the bookmark folders?

The easiest way is exporting all, then opening the HTML file in Word or similar program. Mark the the unwanted folder area, and just delete. Then just save the HTML file with a new name, reopen it in any browser, and you'll see that you've got a flat file without any folders.
