A large terrarium or other suitable glass container is recommended. Cover the bottom of the container with a single layer of pebbles, top the pebbles with granulated charcoal, and mist everything with water. Place sheets of moss in the container and mist with water again, then cover the container and place it in a shady area.

  • Question
How can I replace/grow moss on a planter that used to be moss-covered?
    Community Answer
Moss usually regrows by itself. If you can get a sample of the moss you'd like to regrow, the methods described in this article should help get your planter covered with moss again.
  • Question
Can I take moss from some rocks, put it in a spray bottle with water, shake, and then spray it wherever I want it to grow?
    Community Answer
Unless you absolutely pulverized it and then strained it, all it's going to do is plug up the spray nozzle. Paint it on instead. You just need to apply it to areas that are conductive to growing moss.
  • Question
My moss is turning dark green to black in some areas. What causes this and what can I do?
    Community Answer
It might be mold. Check to see if your environment is not too moist. If it is, consider watering your moss less often.
  • Question
My transplanted moss was healthy in the fall and winter, but now is turning brown. Does it need more water, or should I do something else for it?
    Community Answer
Moss doesn't have roots, so it will regrow naturally even if it's almost dead. Watering it more will help.
  • Question
Can any type of moss be propagated by blending it with the recipe above?
    Community Answer
Yes, as long as you care for it correctly, you can grow any moss with the recipe.
  • Question
Can I grow moss from a bag of peat moss bought at a garden supply store?
    Community Answer
Yes, but since it's dead/dried, you'll have to use the blender method of propagating moss.
  • Question
What herbicide will control weeds but not harm the moss, pre- or post-emergent?
    Community Answer
Do not spray Round-up on moss. Post-emergent herbicides kill almost anything green, while pre-emergent herbicides like Preen work by preventing new weed seeds from germinating altogether, so it won't kill live plants like moss. The only down-side to pre-emergent herbicides is that you need to pull weeds until they live out their short life cycle, but once they're gone, you can keep using it and be weed-free without needing any Round-up, Weed-Be-Gone or similar post-emergent herbicides.
  • Question
If moss is already present and there are weeds in it, how can I get rid of the weeds?
    Community Answer
Hand weeding is best. Moss is very susceptible to any kind of chemical. I found this out the hard way after using weed killer on the dandelions in my moss. I was very careful to only touch the weeds, but ended up with large areas of dead moss around each weed - 5" or more.
  • Question
Can moss grow on any surface, such as plastic?
    Community Answer
No, plastic is too smooth. Moss needs something to grip onto. You can try wrapping a glass or plastic object with a nylon sock or something else that will give it a rough surface.
  • Question
Can dead moss be brought back to life?
    Community Answer
Yes. Just submerge it in some water and be patient.
  • Question
    Is moss toxic to dogs?
    Community Answer
No moss is just a micro plant. It doesn't produce toxins, hormones, or elements that can harm a animal or human.
  • Question
Does moss require shade? Will it die in full sunlight?
    Community Answer
Some mosses can be left in full sunlight, but will need very regular watering. Half to full shade is best.
  • Question
In general, how can I know if these mosses are non-toxic for children?
    Community Answer
You can source your moss from a garden store or a moss nursery. Moss from these sources will not be toxic.
  • Question
Can I grow moss on tree branches to make a moss fence in my garden?
    Community Answer
I didn't do it, the moss just grew by itself, but I have dense moss growing under trees on the exposed roots and elsewhere in shady parts of the garden which haven't been disturbed by mowing. So I'd say yes, you can.
  • Question
Can I grow moss in the space between brick pavers?
    Community Answer
That would be possible, yes. Just make sure to give the moss the amount of space it needs to grow.
  • Question
Does moss need fertilizer to grow?
    Community Answer
    No.
  • Question
Is there a tool that makes weeding around the delicate moss faster and easier?
    Community Answer
I use a battery-powered weed eater over mine. It does a good job, just try not to scalp the moss (but it grows back fast if you do).
  • Question
Should I remove fallen leaf cover from my outdoor moss garden in the fall before our hard Minnesota winters (zone 4)? Or will the leaf cover protect it over the winter?
    Community Answer
Moss will survive low temperatures by itself, but protecting it with leaves would provide an extra layer of protection from the snow.
  • Question
How long do I have to wait for moss to start growing?
    Community Answer
It will take a few months, make sure that you're watering it regularly.
  • Question
How do I make a moss rug for my shower or sink?
    Community Answer
Use the blender option, then use a paintbrush to spread the moss where you want. Make sure you don't step on the moss before it grows.
  • Question
I'd like to grow moss seeds on black sand for my fish tank. How can I get the best results?
    Community Answer
Moss doesn't have seeds. The spores produced from terrestrial moss are unlikely to survive on the substrate. I recommend using java moss or some other entirely aquatic moss. Sandwich it between two pieces of stainless steel mesh and sit it on the sand.
  • Question
Can I give my moss fertilizer to help it grow?
    Community Answer
Fertilizer usually kills most mosses, so it would not be a good idea to give moss fertilizer to help with growth. More frequent watering often helps moss grow more rapidly, however.
  • Question
Will moss grown in a greenhouse? If so, will I be able to walk on it?
    Community Answer
Moss can be grown in a greenhouse, if all of the things it needs for growth and survival are provided. While you can walk on moss, it can only handle light barefoot traffic and not heavy traffic, sliding, running, or walking with shoes.
  • Question
How do I prepare moss when I have alkaline soil?
    Community Answer
You can find commercially-sold additives from big box stores like Lowe's or Home Depot to acidify your soil.
  • Question
How do I stop birds from digging up my moss?
    Community Answer
Put a net above it and drop some lose moss on the pot. The birds will then pick this instead.
