I want to have my curtains hanging away from the window unless closed. Can I do this?

Yes, you can. The easiest way to do that is to have something to keep them to the side, but make sure they don't get stuck. You can also just use ribbons to tie them to a hook.

What clearance from the floor (carpet) should I give eyelet curtains if they touch? They will drag I think.

You could either go to the top of the baseboard or 1" from the floor. If you have pets, then allow at least 1" because they rub into the curtains and sometimes lay right by them, thus making it easy for them to pull down the curtain/s.

When you have a window 8ft (2440) wide and the pole has a centre support bracket, do the curtains close together successfully?

Yes, as the support bracket is thin and about 1/4 inch, especially if you use rings on the top of your curtains/drapes. If you use just material through the rod, it will be harder to close and also might damage your curtains.

How long can a pole be before needing a central support? For fairly heavy, lined curtains.

Anything above 3 and under 4 feet. It also depends on the weight of the curtains themselves. If they are heavy, you might need a support for a shorter rod. Additionally, if your curtain rod is thinner/cheaper, it might bow no matter what. Spending a few extra money for something that you will have for a long time might be a better option. Usually, if the manufacturer of the curtain rods will include a center support when they recommend one for the length of rod you are installing.

Do I need a deeper bracket to hang grommet curtains? Mine do not "pleat" like they should. I tried the finger trick but no luck. I think they need to be further away from the window? Any advice?

Generally, grommet top draperies will require a 6” bracket depth. This is because the undulating folds created by the grommet top undulate approximately 4”. So outward from the window plane, there is 4” depth of fabric, then the pole, then another 4” of fabric in the outward fold. A 6” bracket is a safe bet.

If I'm using a recessed curtain pole, how can I fix the outer grommet to stop it from sliding in?

Put pool noodles between the grommets to keep the curtains from sliding. Cut the pool noodles lengthwise into two pieces and slide them over the pole and put them behind the curtains that have a fold.
