Yes, the messages will still show up when you "wake up" your phone, and Snapchat shows in the notification center. But if you download the app, and it asks if you want to get notifications just put no, then it probably won't show, but you would have to constantly go back in the app. If you're okay with that, then your best bet is to just turn off notifications on apps that you can turn notifications off and on.
