  • Question
How do I get rid of a social phobia?
    Community Answer
It's totally normal to be scared of public speaking and large audiences. If you're determined to get over this fear, you need to practice. It isn't easy, but exposing yourself to gradually more challenging situations can help to build your confidence in front of other people. For example, you could give your speech in front of one person you trust, then more than one person, then more and more until you feel more comfortable. Another tip is to give the speech to yourself in the mirror. This will help you with memorization so you know the material in case you get too nervous.

  • Question
How do I effectively connect with my audience?
    Community Answer
Connecting with an audience is not difficult and a very important element in public speaking. Using your voice and expression to connect with your audience through humor is a good start, although too much humor may spoil your speech. Tailor your speech to the audience (age, profession etc.). Also, be sure to sustain your speech using the same style from the introduction to conclusion.

  • Question
I was very confident for my speech, even while sitting on a chair on the stage waiting for my turn, but as soon as my name was called, my heart started beating fast and my legs were shaking. Help?
    Community Answer
That is stage fright and is very common among first time speakers. Try looking over the heads of those you are addressing. Choose a spot on the wall at the back of the room and stare at it. Pretend no one else is in the room with you. Remind yourself that you are focused and prepared and then concentrate on the contents of your speech.
  • Question
Should I walk around while speaking?
    Community Answer
It all depends on what you're discussing. If for example, you're giving a presentation in class you probably want to interact with your audience by keeping them engaged but not walking around. If however, you're discussing a topic that most everyone can relate with, then walking around will be a nice addition but if there is something you are displaying make sure you are not covering it.
  • Question
How do I reduce the use of filler words?

    Community Answer
Speak slowly. If you are nervous, you might be tempted to rush through your speech. But that will make you prone to stuttering or stumbling over words, which can cause you to use filler words (since your brain can't catch up with your mouth). Calm down and take a deep breath before your speech. Make sure that you have flashcards, a slide deck, or other memorization tools needy if you forget something. Also make sure that you are knowledgeable in your topic. Don't worry if there is silence- you can use the time to think about what you're going to say. It's awkward, but it's better than filler words, which can make you sound unprofessional.
