  • Question
Do I have to try out?
    Community Answer
    Yes.
  • Question
How old do I have to be to apply and what is needed to be able to apply?
    Community Answer
You may need to be over 18 or have your parent's permission, and the requirements will vary based on the position for which you are applying.
  • Question
If I want to be a juggler, how advanced should my act be?
    Community Answer
You should be able to throw at least 4 juggling clubs, but 5 juggling clubs would be even better. If you want to work for a really big circus, 6 juggling clubs will be really handy.
  • Question
Can a contortionist be in Cirque du Solei?
    Community Answer
Absolutely! Cirque du Soleil is a top notch circus though, so you'll have to be really good at it.
  • Question
Would a circus hire a knife thrower?
    Community Answer
It depends on the circus, but in many cases, knife throwing is definitely an act that could be useful. You will need to train extensively for many years though in order to become good enough to sustain an act on your own for a circus.
  • Question
At what age should I start to prepare my act?
    Community Answer
I started practicing contortion and hand-balancing at the age of 2, and I began practicing my routine at 13. I am currently 18 and work on board cruise ships and am waiting for a position on a circus. Depending on the routine, practice for 2 to 5 years, but at least three.
  • Question
I would like to throw knives but do most circuses still do that? What else could I do?
    Community Answer
Knife throwing is still popular in many circuses. There are many acts you can try out for though, such as clowns, jugglers, contortionists, acrobats, dog trainers, motor-bike stunt riders, etc.
  • Question
Can they take people younger than 18?
    Community Answer
Yes but this depends on the circus they plan on joining. Most circuses don’t hire people under 18 but some allow people under 18 to join if they are talented enough.
  • Question
How easy would it be to get a circus job not as a performer? I want to possibly be a costume maker.
    Community Answer
You can create a portfolio of costumes and apply to a circus either online or by mail. They'll let you know whether or not they can afford or want to have a specific costume maker. Otherwise, it might be best to find work for a costume company that specializes in circus wear.
  • Question
Is there a magician gig in circuses?
    Community Answer
Yes, magicians are an important part of the circus. If you have an impressive magic act, you should try out.
