Personally, I use a stitch/row counter, which is easily found at most crafting stores with the knitting/crochet supplies.

The neatest method to increase is to knit through the back loop of the a stitch, Essentially, you are making two stitches in one stitch. After you knit a stitch, instead of slipping it off, place your needle back into the stitch towards the back part still on the needle. Knit another stitch. Another way is to loop the yarn on to the needle. This stitch can make a wide space if you do not use enough tension, especially when going to knit the next stitch.

Under the stitches on the needle, count down each stitch towards the start row. This will give you the number of rows you have knitted. It should match the even or odd row of the stitches that remain on the needle.

If you follow the instructions, for a right-handed pattern, the cable comes out reversed. It is best just to let this happen, as there is no 'correct' way for a cable to face.
