  • Question
Can you bait with fish chunks?
    Community Answer
You would be better off using the 'fresh' fish heads and guts instead of just fish meat chunks. The crawfish (crawdads in Texas) go after the oils given off by the bait. Crawfish don't like catfish bait as much as pan fish (sun perch, bluegills, carp, or other similar fish) cleaning scraps. My catch numbers almost tripled when I quit using catfish scraps and started using perch scraps.
  • Question
Can crawfish traps be set overnight?
    Community Answer
I don't see why not. I always leave mine out overnight, but it depends on what trap you have, how much bait you put in, and how big it is.
  • Question
Can I use any type of fish bait to catch crawfish?
    Community Answer
It really depends on where you live, but most crayfish will eat any kind of dead fish.
  • Question
I don't have any bottles. Can I use a tight wire mesh?
    Community Answer
A heavy-duty mesh might work; anything less, and the crawfish will likely pinch through.
  • Question
Do I have to use the zip ties?
    Community Answer
No, as long as it is secure, it shouldn't affect the trap in any way. Fishing line, floss, string, whatever you can use to make sure it doesn't come undone is fine.
  • Question
Can I use ham or turkey as bait for crawfish?
    Community Answer
Yes, but raw bacon may work even better as an alternative.

    Community Answer
No! When you burn plastic, it releases a toxic fume that can harm you! Never burn plastic bottles.
  • Question
Can this trap be used in any type of water?
    Community Answer
It can be used in any ponds, lake, creeks, etc., but not saltwater or bays (as the ocean currents can pull it away).
  • Question
How do I make a crawfish trap without spreading bacteria into the pond?
    Community Answer
Wash the trap thoroughly, ensuring any dirt or liquid is cleaned out. For bait, use something clean such as fish food or fresh meat.
  • Question

Put the trap near rocky areas, which is where crawfish often hide.

Crawfish are scavengers, they mostly eat dead fish.
  • Question
Can I make a crawfish trap if there's mounds in my yard?
    Community Answer
When the mound is covered, the fish is in the hole. Dig him up or stick a straw down the hole for him to grab. These are not pond dwellers.
  • Question
Can I use a minnow trap for crawfish?
    Community Answer
Yes, you just have to make sit is in a good location with the right bait. I have found that if it is close to the bottom, with a significant structure around it, it will work.
  • Question
Can I use a regular water bottle to make a crawfish trap?
    Community Answer
Possibly but if it is too small, they may not be able to get into the trap. You just have to make sure the hole is big enough for a crayfish to enter your trap.
