The end of the funnel the fish would be able to escape from must be big enough that the fish can get in, but small enough they can't get back out. They will squeeze in if they have to, they aren't deterred by this within reason.

Making a fish trap in the wild can be a bit of work. For the materials, reeds are the best material. If that is not readily available, try phloem or inner tree bark, as that also works well due to its flexibility. You can make cordage from stringy plants to tie the parts of the trap together. Another method is to dig a trip next to a stream or river. This requires digging a circular entrance with a middle trap space, and only breaking the entrance to the trap from the stream or river once you've build the trap.
