  • Question
My friend is crying right now because of a failed exam, how can I make her happy?
    Community Answer
Just be with her, listen if she wants to talk about it, and remind her that one bad grade is not the end of the world. Tell her if she wants help studying for the next exam, you will be there for her. Then ask her to do something fun. Take her out for ice cream, watch her favorite movie, etc.
  • Question
What can I do when my best friend is crying and making me cry and saying that she hates her life and wants to be gone?
    Community Answer
Those are very serious things to say. If someone says that they want to hurt themselves or die, they are probably suffering from depression, and unfortunately you can't just cheer them up at that point. Depression is a disease. Talk to an adult, like your parents or your friends parents, and tell them what she's said. The best thing you can do for your friend is to get her some help.
  • Question
My friend loves a man who is married and has a child. Now she misses him. What can I do?
    Community Answer
Love is messy. Your friend is in love with someone who has already taken the next step in life. Ask the question, is it really worth wrecking a home? Your friend may be hung up on this guy and might just need a push to find someone new and preferably single.
  • Question
My best friend lost her mom 2 months ago. She loved her a lot. She gets sad all the time and I'm worried she's annoyed with me. How can I help her?
    Community Answer
Support your friend and make sure she knows you care. If she prefers being alone, let her be alone, but make sure that if she needs support, she can get some from you. Be kind to your friend and go very easy on her for at least a few months, she is probably feeling very fragile and hurt, so be careful with what you say. Don't try to really force happiness on your friend, the most you should do is give her a heartfelt gift, but humor isn't too good in these situations. Just always make sure you can be there when she needs it most. Things will get easier with time.
  • Question
I have a best friend, but we're in middle school. I have a huge crush on him and I don't know how to talk to him, when I do I start to blush. What do I do?
    Community Answer
Keep being good friends with him. Do you think he likes you back? Do you think it might make you uncomfortable around him? Maybe space yourself from him a little bit and make new friends. If he seems jealous then ask him about it, but if you don't want to, then don't.
  • Question
My best friend in the whole world is upset about not being in the honor grades category. How do I make her feel like she is really smart too?

Just make her feel like they made a mistake. Occasionally do things wrong, and let her correct you on your errors. This will boost her confidence, making her feel smarter than the system.

How do I make my friend happy when she is mad at me?
    Community Answer
Buy her favorite sweet food or a small gift and surprise her. Make her feel special to you by telling you how much you care about her. Apologize if whatever has happened is your fault. Hopefully she will realize and momentarily forget about her issue with you or forgive you, and you can talk again.
  • Question
I have a friend who is suffering from chronic pain. How can I cheer her up?
    Megan Dellenbaugh
    Community Answer
This might sound cheesy, but put together a care package of her favorite things and give it to her with a note that says “I’m here to listen when you need it.” It helps a ton when you can just listen and give her things that you know make her happy.
  • Question
Two of my friends don’t want to be friends any more. What can I do?
    Community Answer
You should let them go. You do not want to try to force yourself to be their friend, because if you do that, it may hurt you in the long run.
  • Question
I have a male best friend who is asking me to be his girlfriend. I don't want to be, but I want to keep the friendship and I want him to be happy. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Simply tell him how you feel. I understand it may be difficult, however, if he is a real friend, he'll understand. You definitely shouldn't date someone you don't really like just because you want them to be happy. Tell him you value him as a friend, but you don't like him romantically.
  • Question
My friend's parents broke up and she gets bullied at school, which means she gets upset. I try to cheer her up, but she goes to another friend instead. How can I be that go-to friend?
    Tom De Backer
    Top Answerer
People are fickle and impossible to predict. Imagine you secretly found a magical, one-and-only list of things a person should to be her go-to friend and worked hard to be all those things; even then, there's no guarantee she'd come to you. If she doesn't want to share this or that with you, then there's nothing you can do to change that. But hey, it's all right. Just be a good friend, let her know you're there for her. Enjoy this friendship, have fun together too, and enjoy all your other friendships as well, and make some more friends this year.
  • Question
What off I’m doing all of this and it’s not helping and I don’t know what to do?
    Tom De Backer
    Top Answerer
Maybe the best thing is not to do anything? Just let the person know you're there, keep making fun plans. You can just sit quietly together, just be there, and do or say nothing. The most important thing is to not give up. It's not your job to guarantee anyone's happiness, but you can definitely try - that's what friends do. Feel free to take a little break, say a week or two every now and then, just to keep your own sanity. Oh, and hugs, which help a lot.
  • Question
I want my best friends and I to remain close for life, so what should I do to make that happen?
    Tom De Backer
    Top Answerer
If it changes, there's nothing you can do. But you can enjoy it. You see, people change. You like each other as you are now, but no one can promise they'll stay this way forever. There's also no way of knowing the ways in which you both will change; and, crucially, there's no knowing if you will like their changes, or they yours. The only thing you can really do in any relationship, friendship or love, is to keep getting to know each other over and over, every half year or so.
  • Question
My friend has been getting a lot of bad grades and stuff has been happening in his family. He lives with his dad, who divorced twice, and to him it seems like everything is going badly. How do I help him?
    Tom De Backer
    Top Answerer
If your friend has three things going badly, and he wonders if everything is going badly and then only writes down those things that are going badly, then yes, the list will be of 100% things that are going badly. So help him expand his list with the things that are going well. I know of one example already: he's got you as a friend. I'm sure there's plenty more things.
  • Question
My friend seems really down. I think she's a little stressed about the amount of schoolwork we are getting. I know she's having a hard time but I don't know how to talk to her about it.
    Community Answer
Approach her and ask with a calm and gentle voice if something is wrong. Let her know that you'll always be available to talk to. Try to make the conversation as comfortable as possible. If she opens up to you, just listen and give her comfort. If the problem is schoolwork, you can help her with her homework or tell her that it will get better.
  • Question
I have a friend who is stubborn and does idiotic things and acts like a child by doing things I hate. She doesn't care about my advice to her, she usually talks less to me now, what to do?
    Lily hannan
    Community Answer
It sounds like you are unhappy in the friendship and that neither of you are feeling very friendly towards each other. If you still want to be friends with her then consider sitting down and having a conversation with her about it, or do not be afraid to find better friends who appreciate you more.

    Community Answer
Ask her/him things about her/himself. As you probably already know, people love talking about them themselves and their life. Try to keep your best friend happy, and when he/she is sad, remind them of happy things. Be the greatest best friend she's/he's going to ever have!
  • Question
My guy best friend feels unhappy but he is not depressed. He has no feelings toward anything going on in his life. How can I help him?
    B A I L E Y 慰無ヮ圧位ゃH A I L E Y ュホわ応ス愛
    Community Answer
Ask him why he's upset. If he just feels unhappy, maybe surround him with happy people that won't overwhelm him. Remind him about happy things, and maybe even do actives he used to always do. If nothing works, something has happened. Do his parents know about this? Any siblings you could ask? Find out why he's upset.
