Separate everything into categories. Look at what you need to be grabbing the most. Put that on top. Keep the files that you do not use at the bottom.

You can go through all the papers and files. Keep the ones that you need and discard those that are not useful. Arrange the files neatly based on color.
  • Question
If the name of the company is "The Mug Co.," Do I file it under "M"?
    Community Answer
Any company that starts with "The" should be filed under the next word, so "The Mug Co." should be filed under "M."
  • Question
How do I change around my Microsoft word files into new categories and file names now that they are old and have changed?
    Community Answer
This sounds like a daunting task, and may be time consuming, but the system is really the same as reorganizing paper files. Determine the new categories that you will use and the names of the files that belong in each one. Then you can very easily use the right-click button on your mouse to drag files into their new locations. Instead of right-clicking, you can highlight the name of the file and select "Cut." Then move the cursor to the desired new location and click "Paste."
  • Question
In a business file room (physical folders) with a mobile walling system, are records filed front to back (as inside a cabinet) or side to side (right to left as in reading order)?
    Community Answer
Side to side (left to right, unless you are using a language that reads right to left, e.g., Arabic).
  • Question
File Folders: Should it be Smith, John & Anderson, Julie OR Smith, John & Julie Anderson?
    Community Answer
In both of the examples that you gave, the first name is "Smith," so the item will be filed in the same place. The more important question is whether you should label that item as "Smith & Anderson" or "Anderson & Smith," because this will affect the filing location. There really is no "right" answer to these questions, as long as you are consistent.
