QuestionDo you have any tips on designing the book's interior or exterior?Alicia Cook is a Professional Writer based in Newark, New Jersey. With over 12 years of experience, Alicia specializes in poetry and uses her platform to advocate for families affected by addiction and to fight for breaking the stigma against addiction and mental illness. She holds a BA in English and Journalism from Georgian Court University and an MBA from Saint Peter’s University. Alicia is a bestselling poet with Andrews McMeel Publishing and her work has been featured in numerous media outlets including the NY Post, CNN, USA Today, the HuffPost, the LA Times, American Songwriter Magazine, and Bustle. She was named by Teen Vogue as one of the 10 social media poets to know and her poetry mixtape, “Stuff I’ve Been Feeling Lately” was a finalist in the 2016 Goodreads Choice Awards. In designing a book, the process often involves collaboration, and while there are instances where the publisher makes final decisions, some are fortunate to actively engage and collaborate creatively with their publisher. You present your concepts, and together, you and your publisher will bring them to life. While writers typically focus on the text, self-publishing offers full creative freedom, albeit with potential resource constraints. Whether working collaboratively or independently, the design process demands active participation and thoughtful decision-making to ensure the visual representation complements the essence of the written work.

QuestionCan I write a book about something if I don't have a degree in that subject?Community AnswerIf you supplement your own research on the subject and work closely with professors, researchers, experts, and already known writers, you can stand on their shoulders for credibility if they endorse your writing. Start cold-pitching people, doing immense amounts of reading and citing your references, you can get some credibility because you did research-level work. Make friendships with people in the field. You may be surprised how many people get curious and want to help you if you just ask for five minutes of their time or ask them to coffee. If you know your subject-matter inside-out, and your idea is interesting to them, they may decide to help you. Don't stop asking and never stop reading.

QuestionCan I write a book about something if I don't have a degree in that particular subject?Kate HayesCommunity AnswerYes. You just have to sell your book, and yourself/“qualifications”/why you had the knowledge to write this book. If you can sell the publisher on you, then you shouldn’t have any issues about official qualifications.

QuestionDo I have to send the whole book to the publish center or just the intro?Community AnswerYou don’t need to send the whole book only the first few chapters and a short summary of what you want the book/series of books to be about. If the publisher likes it, they will most likely contact you saying so and if they don’t they will most likely tell you so.
