QuestionHow do I get over a fear of deep water?Community AnswerFear of deep water is natural. To overcome this, first learn to swim various strokes properly, master one stroke and learn one way of treading and one way of floating which you feel comfortable with, all in water depth you feel comfortable with. Then slowly enter the deep water and spend a bit of time to adjust yourself. It can help to have a good swimmer with you, for reassurance.

I have heard so much about it, but I cannot seem to find information on it online.Community AnswerThe Little Mermaid technique is when you put your legs together, and then whip them around like you're whipping cream. QuestionHow do I swim to the bottom of the pool and go back up?Community AnswerIt's easy and fun. First, get ready. Take a deep breath and use your power to dive to the bottom. Use your limbs to propel yourself to the bottom. Try to be fast in order to time it with your breath. Once you reach the bottom of the pool, stop swimming and you will return to the surface! Your buoyancy wants to take you to the surface, so getting back up is easy. It's getting down that requires effort.

If you're sinking, you can lay your head back to prevent it.

QuestionHow hard is it to tread for 5 minutes?Tom De BackerTop AnswererPretty darn hard. It is a continuous and strenuous exercise, your muscles will get cramped from the lactose acid build up. However, with practice I'm sure you can get to five minutes, and more. I like to do it one minute, 30 seconds rest, 2 mins, 30 s rest, 3 mins, 30 s rest, then back down to 2 mins and 1 min. I've never tried 4, and I know 3 is hard enough, so I assume 5 would be hellishly tough. But you can train and practice to increase your endurance.
-
QuestionHow do I stand up again from floating on my back?Tom De BackerTop AnswererJust move your arms in a swimming water a few strokes, to sort of push up against the water. Alternatively, turn on your stomach and get upright from there. Or let yourself sink a little and swim to the upright position. Or stop moving your legs, they will sink and the momentum will carry you upright. Or exhale and your entire body will sink until you're upright.

QuestionI know how to swim, but with other people around I get flustered and just freeze. What should I do?Community AnswerConsider low-profile goggles or a swim cap. I am a swimmer on a swim team, and find it more reassuring if people do not see my eyes. Otherwise, just tune them out, which a swim cap can help with if you are at swim lessons, swim team, etc.

QuestionCan I tread on water using just my hands, that is without the legs?ShaquaticspoloCommunity AnswerYes, you can but you won't be able to carry anything or anyone to safety in the case of a lifeguard, for example. You won't be able to play around in the deep end the same way you would if you learned how to do an eggbeater. Also, arm strength tends to be weaker than leg strength, so you will tire earlier.

QuestionWhat is the best way to tread water while holding a brick?ShaquaticspoloCommunity AnswerThe most efficient and strongest form of treading is the eggbeater kick, that's why water polo players use it. And don't do it for too long, as holding the brick will tire you.
