  • Question
How do I protect myself from being sued if I write a fanfiction?
    Community Answer
Include a disclaimer noting who owns the copyrights to the characters and settings you're borrowing. As long as you don't make a profit from it or significantly detract from the market value of the original work in some way, you most likely won't come under fire.
  • Question
If I am writing a fan fiction that has multiple chapters, should I write one and wait for feed back and suggestions or just continue to write?
    Community Answer
Continue to write! People will start to read your fan fiction and leave reviews once you start posting more.
  • Question
Is it okay to change the characters feelings/emotions/personality a LITTLE BIT in the story?
    Leio Rossi
    Community Answer
Definitely! In fact, many writers like to write what's called OOC (Out of Character) and emphasize one aspect of a character's personality. This is YOUR writing and you have the creative freedom to do what you want with it.
  • Question
What should I do if no one is reading my fanfiction?
    Community Answer
Keep writing and never give up. Someday, you will get lots of people reading your stuff. Hardly anyone starts with lots of reads in their first day, week, or even month! All you need to do is never stop writing; your story will become more and more popular.
  • Question
Is the only rule of fan fiction to let your imagination run riot?
    Community Answer
Yes and no. Let your imagination run free, but stay within the boundaries of your chosen canon so it doesn't get odd.
  • Question
    Should I publish rough drafts?
    Community Answer
No, you should only publish the final product. Have your beta read the rough draft and help you polish it.
  • Question
How do I upload my fanfiction to the internet?
    Community Answer
You can create a account on fanfiction outlet websites, such as fanfiction.net or wattpad.com. A single account can be used to post an unlimited number of fanfictions.
  • Question
How to raise a pairing's popularity?
    Community Answer
You can't do much to change people's opinions on these things. However, if you write really good fanfiction, it might become popular. You could also go on forums and argue for why the pair is a good one.
  • Question
How do I start a fanfiction story?
    Community Answer
Look for sub-plots in a story you love, then develop those ideas further.
  • Question
Where do I get permission to publish in fanfic.net?
    Community Answer
You do not need to get permission to publish a fanfiction on fanfiction.net. You just need to be 13, have an account, agree to the rules, and choose the proper rating.
  • Question
Can I use pictures in my story?
    Leio Rossi
    Community Answer
I'm not sure if Fanfiction allows people to insert photos, but Wattpad does and Archive of Our Own does as well.
  • Question
    What is a disclaimer?
    Leio Rossi
    Community Answer
A disclaimer is a statement saying that you do not own the characters (unless you inserted some of your own original characters), and that you do not have the rights to the franchise for which you are writing.
  • Question
I'd rather keep my writing a secret from my family, but I would show it to my friends who know nothing about my topic. Would that still be okay for things like feedback and suggestions?
    Leio Rossi
    Community Answer
Feedback is whatever you consider to be helpful to you in bettering your writing, whether that be an online beta reader or a friend. I would, however, suggest that you have someone who knows something about the subject as it will help with characterization.
  • Question
How long should I wait to editing my first draft?
    Community Answer
Wait for as long or as little as you like. It can depend on various different variables, such as when you would like to post your work, or how long it will take for you to edit this piece of writing.

  • Question
My fanfiction is in play format; I've tried to write in normal format but I can't. Any tips?
    Community Answer
Get a writer friend to help you. If you don't have a writer friend, there are plenty of books about writing. Also, visualize the story in your head; then just write it as you see it.
  • Question
What if I write fanfiction based on of a movie I love, but I get bad feedback?
    Leio Rossi
    Community Answer
Posting fanfiction always has a risk to it. If you want to share it with the world, you should. Some fan fiction platforms (like Archive of Our Own) allow for the author to turn off comments.
  • Question
Why are so many fanfic authors giving up on great stories they're writing? I've come across some great works that have been interrupted, which is really disappointing.
    Garrett
    Top Answerer
It depends. Some authors quit to pursue other things in life. Some grow bored. Some genuinely can't see the merit of their own work, even if it is showered with praise.
  • Question
I want to write fan fiction about the Lord of the Rings, but I do not know if I should take one event from the trilogy and make it more exciting or take lots of small, made-up events in Middle Earth. What do you think?
    Community Answer
Do both, and let your creativity run wild! Good works are usually about one great event, but the smaller, made-up stuff going on simultaneously is what makes them good fanfictions. But try not to cram in too many; your readers can't keep up with what's happening.
  • Question
What if you are dying to let your ideas out but you feel embarrassed about the topic?
    Hailey
    Community Answer
Keep it to yourself until you are ready. Practice writing; once you're done and comfortable with the subject, you can share your ideas and stories with anyone you want. Another thing you could do is make a wattpad account and just post them there under an anonymous username.
  • Question
I'm writing a series but I'm too young to have an account on fan fiction sites. What can I do?
    Firestar111
    Community Answer
Well, there are two options. One is to simply lie about your age, that would certainly be the easiest. However, you could also look harder and try to find a site that doesn't care about how old you are. The only problem with this is that most sites want you to be somewhere around 13+. In the meantime, you could just type out your stories and share them with friends, family, classmates, etc.
  • Question
What other fanfiction websites are there besides Wattpad and Quotev?
    Leio Rossi
    Community Answer
There's Archive of Our Own, Fanfiction.Net, Live Journal, Tumblr, Deviant Art (although it's mainly art, there are quite a few fanfiction writers), and many fandom-based websites.
  • Question
How should I express the character's feelings and personality?
    Community Answer
One way is to express your characters personality is through events that happen in the story. A character's reaction to other people and/or events if often very revealing . Example: If you want to show the character is extremely confrontational, he could walk straight up to another character who's say bad thing about him and demand the other character stop.
  • Question
How do I write a fanfiction story about wedding planning and wedding dress shopping?
    Leio Rossi
    Community Answer
You could research your subject online and read other stories that have this theme. Another fanfiction writing platform is archiveofourown.org (also known as Ao3). They have a really good tagging system there, and you can look through the Alternate Universe-Wedding Planner tag to see how other authors have done it.
  • Question
Do I have to put a disclaimer if I'm writing a fanfic about my friends?
    Garrett
    Top Answerer
It would be better to. You can (and probably should) also change their names in the story. In addition, you should really ask your friends if they are okay with you writing about them, first.
  • Question
What if I haven't watched the whole TV show that I want to write a fanfiction about?
    Garrett
    Top Answerer
Then you're bound to miss some things that other people might perceive as obvious, and people will probably point that out. You don't necessarily have to watch the whole, show, however. If you think that the events in your story will heavily conflict with events that occur later in the show, mention in the description at which chronological point your fic takes place in.
  • Question
I'm having trouble finding a way to upload my story to FanFiction.net. What am I doing wrong?
    Leio Rossi
    Community Answer
There should be an Upload button available when you create a story. Unless you wrote it on a lesser-known writing software like Libre, your document should upload pretty well. Alternatively, you could copy and paste your writing where it says you can type it in.
  • Question
Sometimes I know what I want the characters to do in my fanfiction and what point I want to get across, but no matter how hard I try, I can't write it the way I want it. Any suggestions?
    Mermaid Lover
    Community Answer
Just keep trying! Don't give up if you can't get it the way you want it. A good idea would be brainstorming a bunch of thoughts and ideas and pulling from there. Then you can make a rough draft to find a good way to format it.
  • Question
Can a fanfiction add and remove characters?
    Garrett
    Top Answerer
Sure it can. The whole point of fanfiction is to ask, "What if?" What if this character weren't there? What if this character were? The possibilities are endless.
  • Question
How can I write a story in the point of view of a blind person?
    Community Answer
Just describe the world through sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings. For example, if you were describing an ordinary, everyday object, let's say an old grandfather clock, it would sound something like this: "As I listened to the rhythmic tick-tocks of the old grandfather clock, I thought about the person who it had originally belonged to. I never really knew him, the only thing that came to mind was a faint memory. I ran my fingers down the smooth frame, and I suddenly realized that I had to go meet..." and so on.
