Diarrhea is no fun for you or your toddler. In most cases, diarrhea will go away on its own after a few days, but there are some things that you can do to support your child’s recovery. Ensuring that your child stays hydrated is the highest priority, since kids are more prone to dehydration. But you can also make changes to your child’s diet and seek help from your pediatrician to determine the cause of your child’s diarrhea.

  1. Because it is easy for kids to become dehydrated, making sure that your child gets enough fluid is the best thing you can do when she is suffering from a bout of diarrhea. Do not hydrate her with water alone — your child will need to replenish sodium, potassium, and other nutrients lost through diarrhea.Instead, look for oral rehydration solutions (ORS), such as Pedialyte. Make sure you speak to your doctor about how much and for how long you should give your child an ORS. [1]
    • ORSs are available in most drug stores. Do not try to make your own solution unless your pediatrician gives you a precise recipe.

  1. If your toddler’s bowel movements suddenly increase or change consistency, then he probably has diarrhea. Diarrhea can often be treated at home, but it is a good idea to make an appointment for your child to see a pediatrician. Some forms of diarrhea may be caused by food sensitivities, infections, or other conditions that require medical treatment.

    • A distended, enlarged, or tender abdomen
    • Pale skin and/or tiny red, round spots on the skin
