An external flash can add a lot of versatility to your camera, as well as ensure the best exposure for each photograph you take. Learning when to use your flash, and when not to, can make all the difference in your photos. Adjust your flash settings based on the light in your location to get the best photo. You can also bounce, reflect, and diffuse your flash to create interesting effects.

Don’t use the flash if your subject is very far away. For example, if you are taking photos at a stadium, the flash won’t help when your subject is yards from you. The flash can even be reflected off of other surfaces and create undesirable effects in your photo. [5] X Research source
