Who’s Who: Star Wars Characters and Cast
Star Wars is an epic space opera created by George Lucas. Although Star Wars began as a trilogy of movies— Episode IV: A New Hope (1977), Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) , and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983) , it has since become a media franchise—with numerous movies, books, comics, games, and tv shows set within its vast universe. Lucas later created a prequel movie trilogy consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) , and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005) . Years later, a sequel trilogy to the originals was created (though not by Lucas) featuring Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015), Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017) , and Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) . Altogether, those 9 movies are called the “Skywalker Saga.”
Between those movies and the standalone films that take place in that universe (like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Rogue One ), Star Wars is one of the highest-grossing film franchises of all time.
Luke Skywalker is played by Mark Hamill. Luke is the protagonist of the original trilogy—though he also appears in the sequel trilogy. Luke and his twin sister, Leia, were separated at birth, with Luke growing up with his step-uncle Owen on Tatooine (a remote desert planet). After meeting R2D2 and, eventually, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke’s journey began—culminating in his becoming a true Jedi master (and, for a time, the last of the Jedi).
Leia Organa is played by Carrie Fisher. Leia was separated from her twin brother, Luke, and adopted by Bail Organa (a member of Alderaan’s royal family). As such, Leia was raised as an Alderaanian princess—though she also became a leader of the Rebel Alliance. Later, she founded the Resistance (and became its top general), known for her determination and connection to the Force.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a significant figure in the original trilogy (where he’s played by Alec Guinness) and the prequels (where he’s played by Ewan McGregor). Formerly a student of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and later Luke Skywalker’s mysterious guardian, Obi-Wan is a kind yet formidable Jedi Master who helps Luke escape Tatooine. He also faced off against Anakin in the prequels, defeating him but leaving him alive.
Yoda is voiced by Frank Oz. As a wise and powerful Jedi Master, Yoda trains Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Jedi in the original trilogy. Yoda eventually tells Luke he no longer needs training but encourages him to confront his father, Darth Vader. Though Yoda is known for his eccentricity and strange speech patterns, he’s also beloved for his wisdom and sage advice.
Han Solo is played by Harrison Ford (and Alden Ehrenreich in Solo: A Star Wars Story ). Han is the roguish captain of the Millennium Falcon. Initially a smuggler, Han teams up with Luke and Leia in the original trilogy to fight the Empire and support the rebellion. Later, Han and Leia also have a child together: Kylo Ren (also known as Ben Solo).
Chewbacca , affectionately known as Chewie, is a very furry (and loyal) Wookiee played by Peter Mayhew. In the original trilogy, he’s Han’s co-pilot on the Millennium Falcon—though he also appears in the sequel trilogies, again flying the Falcon and assisting the Resistance.
Lando Calrissian is played by Billy Dee Williams in the original trilogy (and Donald Glover in Solo: A Star Wars Story ). Lando is the former owner of the Millennium Falcon—having lost it to Han Solo. Once a smuggler, Lando became a freedom fighter against the Empire and even helped the rebellion destroy the second Death Star.
R2D2 is an astromech droid played by Kenny Baker in the original trilogy (and Jimmy Vee in the sequels). He’s first discovered carrying Leia’s famous message: “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.” R2D2 later accompanies Luke, Leia, and Han on their adventures, appearing in all 9 main Star Wars films.
Anakin Skywalker is played by Hayden Christensen. Anakin was born on Tatooine and believed to be the “chosen one” who could bring balance to the Force. A force-sensitive person with a midi-chlorian count higher than Master Yoda’s, Anakin showed great promise as a young Jedi—but was eventually lured to the dark side at the end of the prequel trilogy. Before going to the dark side, Anakin secretly married Padmé Amidala and had two children with her: Luke and Leia.
Darth Vader , Anakin’s dark alter ego, is portrayed by David Prowse and voiced by James Earl Jones in the original trilogy. Vader was Emperor Palpatine’s enforcer and one of the most feared figures throughout the Empire.
C3PO is played by Anthony Daniels. C3PO is a protocol droid built by a young Anakin Skywalker to help care for his mother, Shmi. However, C3PO eventually accompanies Anakin (and later Luke) on many adventures, assisting both the rebellion and the Resistance.
Padmé Amidala is played by Natalie Portman. Padmé was the Queen and later Senator of Naboo. She’s known for her bravery and dedication to resisting the Empire—though she’s also the mother of Luke and Leia. After falling in love with Anakin Skywalker, the two secretly marry in the prequels.
Qui-Gon Jin is played by Liam Neeson. Qui-Gon Jinn is a Jedi Master who finds Anakin on Tatooine and takes him away to be trained. Although Qui-Gon originally planned to be Anakin’s teacher, he died at the hands of Darth Mail—and asked Obi-Wan Kenobi to train Anakin as his dying wish.
Darth Maul is played by Ray Park. He's an evil Sith Lord trained by Darth Sidious. In the prequels, Darth Maul is responsible for killing Qui-Gon Jinn—and, although Obi-Wan Kenobi appears to kill him later, he’s found alive in the Clone Wars animated series and, therefore, likely to appear again.
Mace Windu is played by Samuel L. Jackson. Mace is a Jedi Master on the Council with Master Yoda in the prequels. He’s the only known wielder of a purple lightsaber—thought to represent his wisdom and understanding of both the light and the dark. Anakin and Darth Sidious defeated Mace after he discovered a plot to destroy the Jedi.
Rey is played by Daisy Ridley. She is introduced in the sequel trilogy as an unknown scavenger on the desert planet Jakku. However, she’s quickly revealed to be force-sensitive and eventually trains as a Jedi under Luke Skywalker. Later, it’s revealed that Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter—although she rejects him and embraces the path of a Jedi Master.
Poe Dameron is played by Oscar Isaac. He's a courageous and daring Resistance pilot responsible for helping General Leia win the war against the First Order. He also helped Finn escape the First Order in the sequel trilogy.
Finn is played by John Boyega. He's a former Stormtrooper introduced in the sequel trilogy. Although he’s treated as cannon fodder among the Stormtroopers, Finn decides to break free and join the Resistance, helping Rey, Poe, and General Organa. Finn eventually discovers that he may be Force-sensitive as well.
BB-8 is voiced by Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz. BB-8 is an astromech droid belonging to Poe Dameron. In the sequel trilogy, BB-8 is wanted by the First Order because he holds a clue to Luke Skywalker’s location. After running into Rey and Finn, BB-8 joins them as they escape from Jakku.
Kylo Ren is played by Adam Driver. Kylo Ren is the alter ego of Ben Solo—Leia and Han’s son. Turned to the dark side years ago, Kylo Ren leads the First Order. However, he shares a connection with Rey throughout the sequel trilogy that eventually leads him back to the light.
Emperor Sheev Palpatine is played by Ian McDiarmid. He's an evil Sith Lord (also known as Darth Sidious) responsible for bringing Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side and staging a coup to kill all Jedi in the prequel series. Although Vader appears to kill Palpatine in the original trilogy, he returns to fight his granddaughter, Rey, in the sequels.
