“Hey, how are you doing today?” Not great. Today isn’t a good day. “I’m sorry. That really sucks. How about I make some mac and cheese for dinner? We can eat on the couch and watch a movie, if you want.” You don’t have to hang out with me. I know I’m no fun right now. “I want to hang out with you! I even got your favorite kind of macaroni, the ones in the little shells. We can just relax together, no pressure to get things done or talk or anything. It can just be you and me tonight.” I don’t really feel good. I don’t feel like doing anything. “That’s totally fine. Just take it easy and relax in bed for a while.” Is that OK with you? “Yeah, of course. Don’t worry about it at all. Do you want any snacks or anything? I think we have that really good kind of crackers you liked so much last time.” I’m really not hungry. “OK, that’s fine. Is it OK if I just lay with you for a while and hold your hand?” If you really want to. “I do. Getting back home and seeing you is the best part of my day.” Even when I’m feeling like this? “All the time. You’re my favorite part of every day.” “Hey Rachel, I was about to get in the shower. Did you want to go first?” I don’t really feel like it right now. “If you want, we could hop in together? Or I could make a bubble bath for you. You still have that soap that your mom got you that smells really good.” I don’t know… “I’ll just get it all ready, and if you still feel like you don’t want to, I’ll just jump in instead, OK? And afterwards we can just relax together on the couch for a while.” OK, we can do that.
