Introduce your character to the reader by describing the unique way in which she moves or carries herself. Marjorie strode forward with the self-assured grace of a lioness. She glanced casually around the room, not deigning to rest her regal gaze upon any of the less important guests. Describe your character through the eyes of someone else—for instance, a stranger or a friend. “I wish my hair would do that naturally,” whispered a nervous-looking girl to her friend. Marjorie bit back a humorless smirk. The soft auburn curls that tumbled with effortless elegance around her face were the result of a two-hour-long wrestling match with her curling iron. Make your character come alive by including sensory details, such as touch and taste. Her silk gown was the juicy red of a ripe strawberry and whispered around her ankles as she moved forward. Everything about Marjorie radiated a sense of power and assurance. Almost everything—her long-fingered hands fluttered uneasily through the air, endlessly searching for something to grasp.
