Where should you live next?

Whether you’re looking for a fresh start or just curious about your options, thinking about a big move is an exciting prospect! The world is your oyster, as long as you have the gumption to get up and chase here. But moving ain’t all sunshine and rainbows, and there’s much to consider. Here’s where to start:

Language & Communication
Wherever you move, you’ll have to be able to talk to other people to help you navigate and settle in, so what language you speak matters. Some places will speak the same language you do, other places will favor another primary language but still accommodate yours, and in yet other places you’ll have to take some language lessons if you want to fully assimilate to your new home.

Price & Cost of Living
This is the second most important aspect. How much money are you willing to spend? You’ll probably be able to get by in most places—people do it every day—but depending on your income, you’ll be more comfortable in certain places and less comfortable in others. Your career and job prospects also play a huge role in this. Often, working remotely makes the move much easier than showing up and asking for a job as a foreigner.

Climate
Some people are happy in rain, shine, snow, or hail. Other people need a constant beachy, summery vibe to stay upbeat. Don’t underestimate how big an impact the climate can have on your experience! That’s why it’s a great idea to visit the place a few times throughout the year before you move there permanently, so you get an idea of the yearly weather patterns and what you’re in for.

Public Services
This is a smaller aspect, but it can still have a dramatic impact. Does your new home have public transportation to help you get around, or will you need your own mode of transportation? Does it offer healthcare to outsiders, or will you have to pay out of pocket for a doctor’s visit? Is it generally safe, or should you make some quick friends so you have some allies?

Your Personal Interests Last but certainly not least is making sure your new home’s personality matches your own. If you’re not an outdoorsy person, you probably won’t love a mountain city with lots of wildlife. But if you yearn for the hiking trail, you’ll feel stuck in a sprawling urban center that’s mostly asphalt. Cities and towns are like people, and you want one that matches your interests, lifestyle, and vibe.
