Basics
* Each game consists of two 35 minute halves
* Each team can field 11 players, including ten outfield players and a goalkeeper
* Outfield players are broken into defenders, midfielders and attackers (the exact number of each varies depending on team strategy)
* Each team carries six substitutes
* Two umpires officiate the match
Field Size
* The field should be 100 yards long and 60 yards wide
* The field should be divided by a center line and a 25-yard line on each side
* A striking circle should be marked 16 yards from the goal posts
* The goal cages should be 7 feet high, 12 feet wide, and 4 feet deep
Gameplay
* Players must pass or dribble the ball with the flat side of their stick
* A goal is scored when a player shoots the ball in the net from within the striking circle
* Players can’t shield the ball using their body or stick
Overtime
* If the score is tied after regulation the game goes to penalty strokes
* In the penalty stroke competition, each team chooses five players to take alternate penalty shots
Fouls
* For most fouls, the team that is fouled is awarded a free hit
* The fouled player receives control of the ball at the location of the foul
* Opponents must start 5-yards away
* If the foul is committed within the shooting circle, the attacking team receives a penalty corner (explained below)
* Players receive a foul for doing any of the following:
* Playing the ball with the rounded side of the stick
* Shielding the ball with their body or stick
* Charging, shoving, or tripping opposing players
* Using their feet or legs to support their stick
* Moving the ball with anything other than their stick
* Interfering with an opponent’s stick
Penalty Corner
* A penalty corner is awarded for fouls inside the striking circle
* All players must remain outside the striking circle until the ball is played
* The ball is placed 10 yards from the goal post at the end line
* The player performing the penalty corner passes the ball to a teammate at the top of the striking circle
