* Relatable characters * The two people falling in love should seem like real human beings, with flaws and imperfections. Readers should be able to see themselves in the characters in some way. * Complex characters * In addition to being relatable, ideally, the characters have some depth to them in the form of an interesting backstory, identities outside this central relationship, etc. Although the romantic element is important, of course, exploring who the characters are outside of the romance will make them feel more real. * Conflict * Conflict is a basic part of any story, to move the plot along and keep readers on their toes. Love stories usually have plenty of emotional tension between the couple. There may also be conflict that is external to the relationship, throwing more problems their way. * Genuine emotion * It’s important that readers believe that the two main characters really are in love, so there should be plenty of chemistry between the pair. The reader should be able to share in some of the emotional intensity the characters are experiencing.
