To FTC Investigators,
I would like to inform the FTC of a telemarketing scam I recently encountered. I received a phone call on June 29th from 555-555-0198. Upon picking up the receiver, I was blasted by the sound of a fog horn. The next thing I know, a pre-recorded voice on the other end of the line told me I won a free cruise to the Bahamas.
This sounded nice to me so I pressed "1" to speak with a representative. The woman who came on the line reiterated that I had won a free cruise, but before she could process my ticket, I would need to provide a credit card for liability purposes. I pulled out my credit card and began reading off the number. About halfway through something didn't feel right, so I started asking more questions. She became angry and said things like, "Do you want your free cruise or not?" and "If you don't give me that card number, the cruise will be given away to someone else."
At that point I realized this was some kind of scam. I asked her who she worked for so I could provide that information to you. Unfortunately, she hung up immediately after I asked the question. All I have is the incoming phone number. I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Richard Hopstead
