What Makes Someone Naive?

Naive people are trusting and have a positive outlook on everything and everyone. They are often sheltered or have the privilege of not knowing the harsh realities of the world. While this lack of knowledge and optimistic view isn’t a fault, it could be dangerous, especially if someone is in a vulnerable situation.

Characteristics of naivety include:

  • Excessive trust. Naive people believe everything and readily and quickly trust others no matter what.
  • Lack of experience. Those who are naive haven’t experienced harsh life lessons, which may make them vulnerable and have poor judgment.
  • Overly idealistic. Someone who is naive tends to be overly positive, which can cloud their judgment and cause them to dismiss other emotions.
  • Overly generous. Naive people have kind hearts, but their kindness is often taken advantage of, which could put them in danger.
  • Easily influenced. Those who are naive tend to always see the best in others and are easily swayed by other people’s opinions.

Having an idealistic mindset and a kind heart are often considered strengths, but having too much of a good thing can be troubling. There’s a difference between being openly optimistic and blindly optimistic. Those who are naive are blindly optimistic, meaning they aren’t critical.

To avoid being naive:

  • Expand your knowledge. Dive deep into a range of topics, read books, volunteer, engage in difficult conversations, and learn about different viewpoints and cultures.
  • Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to question the world around you. The whys and hows can help you be more critical.
  • Try new things. Be open to learning new things and doing things that intimidate you; step outside of your comfort zone.
  • Challenge yourself. Analyze and question your own biases and work to counter them.
