1. Go to the TSA website and fill out an application.
2. After you fill out an application, they'll contact you. You'll have to go in and actually have an in-person appointment with someone.
3. They'll ask you some security questions, take your fingerprints, and do a background check. And after a period of time, you will hopefully get approved.
I also think if you're going to apply for TSA Pre-Check, which is maybe between $75 and $100, you might as well apply for Global Entry, which is one step higher. With Global Entry, for any returning flights internationally coming back into the U.S., you get to skip through security. If you get Global Entry, it covers your TSA Pre-Check, so you’ll have it all in one. It is a little bit more expensive, but not significantly. It's about $150 or something.
Most travel credit cards these days all cover the costs for both. The next time you are signing up for a travel credit card, use that credit, apply for Global Entry, and get both for free. It's good for 5 years, so you don't have to constantly think about it or renew it.
One website I can recommend that I really like is called Sky Scanner . Something cool about it is that you can really play around with your route to find the cheapest flight. Let's say you want to go to Rome, but you are indifferent about where you fly out of. You can have that flexibility and keep the departure destination as the US, the destination as Rome, and look for the cheapest options. Let's say you're like, “I'll go anywhere. I just want to go these dates from this departure airport”, then you can see what destination has the cheapest flights. You can also do things with your dates. You could plug in a three-month range and say, “When are the cheapest flights over these three months?” I don't really find that flexibility with a lot of other websites. Definitely not with airline websites or Expedia.
One city that I think is great for solo travel is New York . I feel like some people worry that it's too dangerous, but it's a city where so many people are eating alone and walking around alone, so it's just really easy to blend in as a solo traveler. There are also so many museums, which is a wonderful solo travel activity.
Other cities that would make for a wonderful solo trip would be Chicago, Nashville, or somewhere like Sedona , which has a lot of spa-type resort hotels. You could also do a road trip. If you’re more into nature, I did the Pacific Coast Highway solo down the California coast, which was a really wonderful trip – very safe, easy, lots of places to stop, kept myself busy. Those are places that immediately come to mind for me.
