It can be difficult to make the transition from childhood or adolescence to becoming a capable adult. Everyone has a different version of what it means to be an adult, but there are some common goals to achieve in order to function as an independent person and make your way through life on your own merit, without the help of parents or guardians.

  1. At the very least, earn a high school diploma or GED. If you can, however, consider going for a college Associates or Bachelors degree. This will improve your chances at landing a well-paying job that you enjoy. Afterwards, you can even go back to college and earn a Masters or PhD degree. This will improve your chances of landing that job. [1]
    • Find something you love to stick with in school, and this will likely give you a purpose in your adult life.
  2. Diligently search online job hunting sites, newspaper classifieds, or get to know people in your field that might have job opportunities for you to start earning a paycheck. Once you have a job, get to work on time every day, do your work consistently, and find opportunities to learn; this will show your worth as a responsible employee. [2]
