This only works if you live in a northern climate where it reaches freezing temperatures for a good part of the winter. Rink must be constructed before freeze.

Steps

  1. Drive a temporary stake at each corner. Connect each stake with a taut string to measure level. Adjust string until it measures level at all points. String should be approximately 10 inches (25.4 cm) from ground at lowest point.

  2. Planks should be 2 inches (5.1 cm) thick and 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide.
  3. Starting at any corner, drive a permanent stake into ground, removing temporary stake if necessary. Stand first plank on edge against stake. Align top of plank to level of string. Attach plank to stake firmly with long deck screws.
  4. Level to string. Attach plank to stake with screws.
  5. Fill large gaps with narrower planks.
  6. Cut off all stakes to level of planks or lower. Remove temporary corner stakes and string.
  7. Level thoroughly.
  8. Remember the massive weight of water that will push into this box. Weak construction will ensure failure. Cover entire rink with heaviest gauge of plastic sheeting. Be careful not to snag or rip plastic. Plastic sheeting should be large enough to cover pea gravel base, and then up and over plank walls. Keep wrinkles in plastic to a minimum. Press plastic liner into base completely to edges and fold up walls. Fold all corners neatly. Fold and staple liner neatly around outside edge of plank walls. Trim excess liner if needed.

      Tips

      • Place whole bales of straw around outside edge of rink for safety.
      • Get a bunch of foam pool noodles (usually on clearance at the end of summer). With a utility knife, cut a straight line down the length of the noodle, deep enough to get to the center hole. It should look like a 'C' from the side now. After laying the plastic over the side boards, use the split noodle to hold the plastic onto the board. The foam helps protect the plastic, and more importantly, body parts that hit the boards while playing. Also, at the end of the season, it's a lot easier than pulling out a ton of staples .
