Uber Drivers are always told to accept trips, but if you've accepted a trip that you know you won't be able to take or handle, it's imperative that you cancel their trip, quickly if possible.
Steps
-
1Recognize the best time to cancel a ride. The only time you'll have is before you actually pick up the rider. You can't cancel a ride once you've picked up the passenger and started the ride using the "Start (Uber service)" slider. If you already have, you must complete the ride in-progress, or into a high Uber-populated location where another Uber ride is better found.. But to be fair, tell Uber to refund the rider's money because the ride wasn't given in full - riders will think better of their drivers if the driver has Uber refund their money.
- But keep in mind that cancelling will cause the rider to give you a smaller rating less than five stars in most cases.
-
2Tap the ETA bar at the bottom of the screen. Although you'll notice the "Start (Uber service) slider and rider's name pop open, you'll want to select other options in this menu.Advertisement
-
3Tap the person icon button to the right of the rider's name. Doing so, will pull up the cancelation reason's page.
-
4Tap the reason why you need to cancel the ride. The choices you get will depend on how far from the pickup location you are.
- At first, you'll have such options as "Accepted trip by accident", "Problem with pickup route", "Made a wrong turn" and "Pickup isn't worth it" as well as "Vehicle issue", but if your reason isn't listed, you can tap the "More issues" choice and select either "Personal issue", "Need to rest" or "None of these".
- If you are near the pickup location (within 1000-1500 feet), your reasons will include: Can't find the rider", "Nowhere to stop", "Rider's items don't fit", "Too many riders", "Unaccompanied minor", "No car seat", "Rider has an animal" (Uber is trying to see just how bad the cancellation for service animals is really at), "Rider behavior", "Vehicle issue" and "More issues". If you select "More issues", you'll get "Don't want to wait", "Personal issue", "Need to rest" and "None of these".
- If you reach the area, then try to move away, you will still get this nearest area location list of reasons.
- If your wait time timer has been ticking away (or has gone past the three-minute wait-time applied wait time, upon tapping your cancellation choice, you'll have the ability to choose whether or not you'd like to charge the rider. However, please contact your rider first to ensure your rider knows that you are waiting for them before they feel the burn for something that was only in your control.

Tips
- Riders will like you to be honest with them and would be more than likely to give you better ratings if you contact them if they don't show within a set period before cancelling - sometimes they'll be watching and waiting around while other times riders may be in another room and gathering their stuff to head out the door or lose track of time and would appreciate the call to remind them "it's time" even though Uber is helping out with reminding them now. Thanks
- If you are driving when you have to cancel the ride (such as when you are trying to get to the rider's address), pull over to cancel the ride. Thanks
- If you have been waiting past the free 2 minute mark then even past the three minute mark (and after messaging the rider) still don't get an ample notification saying they're coming, Uber will tell you that it's okay to cancel. You're person icon will display a blue "flag" on it stating that it's okay to cancel. In the past, Uber narrowed the "Start (service type)" and added a cancel button to it's left. But it's feature got modified and this change is the way it now shows. Thanks
Don't try to cancel a ride unless it is your last decision on the pickup of the rider. And if you are going to, make sure you cancel in a timely manner.
