River Survival is one of the game modes introduced in Super Mario Party for the Nintendo Switch. It's a cooperative game mode, meaning that your goal is to work together with the other 3 players and make it to the end of the course before time runs out. Along the way, you'll encounter things like balloons containing mini games, time clocks and sets of music notes (collecting them all can cause a mini game balloon to appear), which can help add to your time. This game mode may sound confusing, but it can be a great way to have fun with family and friends. This wikiHow will teach you how to complete River Survival in Super Mario Party.

Steps

  1. 1
Pick/change your party if needed. If you'd like to use different characters (even your own) or set characters at a different difficulty level, or if you have not yet picked your party for this game (and are not playing with 3 other people), you can do this outside of the Party Plaza. If you aren't yet in the Party Plaza, you'll be able to pick your party members after selecting your character. If you are, from the main area (with River Survival mode, Mario Party, and Sound Stage mode), head downwards, following the white arrow. This will take you to the Party Plaza entrance. Talk to the Toad there, and you should be able to change your party members.
    • Keep in mind that usually, one group will be normal, another will be hard, and the third will be very hard.
    • Alternatively, you can also change a member of your party by talking to a character if you see them in the plaza, and they'll ask to join you, though like with the other method, you will have to swap them out with another member of your party.
  2. 2
Know where to find River Survival mode. Once you've entered the Party Plaza, head a little to the left, where you should notice a green-colored stand being run by a green-colored Toad. Talk to this Toad, and you'll be able to enter River Survival mode.
    • If you're lost, the Party Pad's map (which can be accessed by pressing the Y button on the red Joy-Con, or the arrow that points right on the blue Joycon when it is vertical) on can take you directly there. Once you open the map, find River Survival mode and tap on it, and you should be taken directly to the start menu.

  3. 3
Understand the controls for this game. While the controls for the mini games will vary (but will be shown to you before the mini game starts), to row the boat, move your Joycon as if you are rowing a boat. This motion will be demonstrated on the game's screen.
  4. 4
Find out how to gain more time. There are a few ways to gain more time in River Survival mode. The first is by collecting time clocks, which may appear at various points throughout the course, the second is by going through red balloons, which will take you to a mini game, the third is by passing through various checkpoints, and the fourth is by high-fixing your teammates/your oars at the right time (discussed below).
    • If you notice music notes, try to collect them all, since this will spawn a red balloon. [1]
  5. 5
Learn about the mini games. The mini games in River Survival mode are all focused on cooperation. Work together with your teammates to try and complete the mini game, either as quick as possible or by getting as high a number of something as possible, and you'll receive extra time, the exact amount depending on how well you did. [2]
    • If your team did well at a mini game, shake your Joycon once at the right time when you hear/see "Ready? Yeah!" to high five your teammates and earn extra time (the exact motion will be demonstrated on-screen).
  6. 6
Take note of how to choose a path. As you're rowing, you will eventually come across different tunnels, that lead to different paths. You should notice pictures above each of the tunnels, that give a hint about what to expect on each path. Row towards whichever path you'd like to attempt.
    • Your next route can only be one of two that is directly adjoining the one that you're currently on. [3]
    • Some paths may also contain boss battles, such as Mega Cheep Cheep (referred to as "Mysterious Leviathan"), Kamek (referred to as "Mysterious Sorcerer") or Mega Blooper ("Referred to as "Mysterious Kraken"). [4] The directions for completing these should be on-screen.
    • While in the tunnel to a new path, shake your Joycon once at the right time when you hear/see "Ready? Yeah!" to high-five oars with the other players and get extra time (the exact motion will be demonstrated on-screen).
  7. 7
Make it to the end of the course before time runs out. The finish line should be marked clearly with a banner, along with a bunch of characters celebrating.

      Tips

      • If you complete three different paths in River Survival mode, you can unlock Donkey Kong as a playable character. You'll know you were successful if he is in the crowd celebrating at the finish line when you complete your third path. [5] However, afterwards, you will need to talk to him when you notice him in the plaza in order to officially unlock him. [6]
      • You'll receive the Gem of Courage, which is one of the five obtainable gems in this game if you complete all of the River Survival mode routes. [7]
        • After receiving the Gem of Courage, talk to Birdo, and you'll receive a Gold Oar that should help you in River Survival mode. [8]
