While many riders will be ready and waiting when their Uber driver arrives, there are some riders who may need a heads-up once you're at the pick-up location. If you ever need to contact your rider, Uber has your back, providing an easy method to do so.

Steps

  1. 1
Switch into your Uber Driver app and accept a trip. In order to have a rider to contact, you need to accept a ride! You should at least be in the process of heading to the destination, if not there already, when you contact them.
  2. 2
Tap the ETA bar at the bottom of the screen. This may show the time and distance to destination, depending on what part of the ride you're on. Tapping it opens up a menu.

  3. 3
Tap the three vertical dots to the right of the rider's name. This will open a simple menu for you containing only two options: "Contact" and "Cancel trip".
  4. 4
Choose the "Contact" button from the dialog box.
  5. 5
Use in-app messaging to contact your rider at first. Uber now mandates that Driver contact riders by their new in-app messaging feature rather than calling them or using the former messaging numbers that were once widely used in some Uber cities using integrated in-phone messaging apps tied to a single phone number. Tap the text box at the bottom of the screen and type away. Tap the Return key on the keyboard to send the message.
  6. 6
Call the rider, if need be. Uber asks you to wait a few moments for a response at first, but they do provide the telephone button at the top right corner of this in-app messaging feature. Get your phone to call the person by tapping "Call".
  7. 7
Wait for a response. If you back out of the messaging page and onto the map, Uber Driver will deliver their reply as an audible message that will be read aloud to you, to which you can press the "OK, Got it" button to acknowledge their answer, or you can tap message and go back to composing a new reply.
    • If you need to contact them again, you may need to go back to the in-app messaging feature and send another message.

      Tips

      • Uber tries to mask the rider's (and driver's) real phone numbers for privacy.
      • If you try to call or message the rider once your trip is complete, the communication won't go through and you'll get an error back saying this number can't be found. However, your riders can still contact and get through to you for several hours after their drop-off has occurred.
      • In any form of contact you choose, make sure that the passenger realizes that the number they are given is that of you, their Uber driver .
