GroupMe is one of the world's most popular apps for group messaging. By creating a group in the app, you can communicate efficiently and effectively with several people at once. You can add contacts if you have their email address or phone number, or you can use an invite link. Here's how to create a group on GroupMe using your iPhone, iPad, Android, or Windows or Mac computer.

  1. Tap Chats .
  2. Tap the New chat button.
  3. Tap Group .
  4. Enter a group name, avatar, and description.
  5. Tap the checkmark.
  6. Tap Share , then Copy to invite members via link.

    • If you don't see this button and you're using an iPad, tap Chat at the top first.

    Tap Group . This will be next to an icon of two people.
    • The Group creation page will open.

    Enter your group name. The name must be 140 characters or under.

    Add an avatar and description (optional). While not required to create a group, using an avatar and description can help differentiate other groups if you have more than one.
    • To assign an avatar, tap the square at the top and select a photo from your gallery.
    • To set a description, type into the Add a description field. You can use up to 250 characters.

    Tap the checkmark. This is in the top-right corner. The group will be created.
    • You may see Done instead of a checkmark.

    Add members. You can enter a name, email address, or phone number at the top to search for new contacts. If you already have contacts added, you can find them in the Contacts tab.
    • If you'd rather share a joinable link, tap Share and select Copy . You can then paste the link elsewhere, such as another messaging app or social media.
    • Keep in mind that anyone with the link can join, so be sure to share it privately with those you want to invite.
    • If you want to remove a member after they've joined, tap the group avatar, tap Members , and then tap the person. Tap Remove from group . [2]

    Change your settings (optional). Once you add members, you'll be able to change your group's settings. If you don't automatically see this option, tap your group's avatar, and then select Settings .
    • Tap Disable sharing to turn off the ability to share your group via link.
    • Tap Personalization to apply a theme or change the default "like" Emoji.
    • Tap Privacy to allow anyone to join or only those after Admin approval
    • Tap Change owner to give ownership of the group to someone else
    • Tap Leave group to leave any group you were invited to
    • Tap End group to permanently delete the group

    Can I restrict who can add and delete members of the group?

    Yes. If you make the group a "closed group" (this option is available when creating the group), then only the owner can add/remove members. The owner can make members of the group admins, who will also be able to add/remove members.
