A ruin grader is an enemy in Genshin Impact that can potentially cause severe damage to your character's health and/or block your path for a good while. Defeating a ruin grader is not impossible, though; with the right strategy, you will be able to avoid serious health damage, while at the same time progressing towards defeating the enemy.

Steps

  1. You will mostly need characters that can participate in melee combat. Your Traveler is okay for melee combat, but Claymore characters like Beidou and Xinyan are probably going to do the job more easily. You can use an archer, but it will probably not be as useful as a Claymore.

Avoiding Damage

  1. In this attack, the ruin grader moves towards you and then uses its hands to smash you. Immediately after, it will fire a laser in your direction. Move away from the clap and the laser to dodge.
  2. Like the ruin guard, the ruin grader can spin to hit you with its arms. When this happens, move outside of the area of effect (AoE) to avoid heavy damage.
  3. The ruin grader will launch honing orbs at you to try to deal more damage. These orbs persist on the ground and deal damage if you are too close to them.
  4. In this attack, the ruin grader will charge towards you. Move to the side to avoid getting massive damage.
  5. The ruin grader will fire targeted lasers towards you to deal even more damage. Run to avoid the concentrated lasers.

Dealing Damage

  1. Using Claymore, you can hit both cores in the ruin grader's feet when exposed. You can also use elemental skill to your advantage.
    • After attacking for the first time, the cores will lock, and you will be unable to attack it. After the second attack, the ruin grader will be unable to move. It will continue to be able to fire lasers at you.
  2. This will fully disable the ruin grader, allowing you to deal more damage to the enemy.
  3. The ruin grader will remain crouching for 15-30 seconds and then reactivate. Use this window to deal additional damage.
    • If you only disable the laser, the Ruin Grader will still be able to stomp on you, and if you only disable the feet, the Ruin Grader will still be able to fire lasers.
  4. If done correctly, the ruin grader will effectively be defeated, dropping a chaos device. You may also get a chest unlocked that can drop valuable materials and/or result in you leveling up.

I'm preparing to fight this for the In The Mountain's Quest. How can I conserve HP?

    Top Answerer
The best way to conserve HP is to bring healers with you in your party. Choose someone like Barbara or Qiqi as they are dedicated healers and will always regenerate HP for your party, regardless of build. Diona, Noelle, Xinyan, and Zhongli are also good as they can generate shields to help prevent you taking damage.

I am fighting a ruin grader in an event that has trial characters. Should I use my Xiao or my Hutao?
    Community Answer
Xiao and Hu Tao are both great 5-stars, but I’d recommend using Hu Tao because she can deal lots of damage in a very swift way. Although Xiao is very powerful, Hu Tao can do lots of CRIT DMG.

      Tips

      • You will have a better time if the party's level (i.e. average level of all characters in your party) is the same or higher than the enemy's level.
      • Certain food items increase your defense and protects against Pyro damage resulting from being hit by the lasers.
      • Certain artifact combos can regenerate your other characters' health. Consider this when leveling up your characters in the "Characters" screen.

      Warnings

      • If it is obvious that your characters are losing a lot of health, teleport to a Statue of the Seven to regenerate health and consider fighting when your party and/or adventure level is higher.
