Identifying and solving bad tastes from your disposable vape
PDF download Download Article

Nothing harshens your vibe like a burnt or charred pull on your Elf Bar. Most often, this is caused by low e-liquid levels inside your vape, or working your vape too hard so that the heating element inside overheats. We’ll tell you more about what’s causing your vape to taste burnt, how to prevent those problems, and how to disassemble and refill your vape to make sure your vape is full up and working properly.

Things You Should Know

  • Check your vape’s packaging for its puff count, or how many puffs you can take before it runs out of juice, which can cause that burnt flavor.
  • Increase the time between your puffs to 2-3 minutes to avoid overheating your vape. Or, turn your vape’s wattage setting to low to avoid burning it out.
  • Return your vape to the store or the manufacturer if it still doesn’t work after some troubleshooting; it may be faulty.

Identifying the Cause of the Burnt Taste

  1. Your Elf Bar creates vapor by saturating heated coils inside the vape with vape liquid, which then gets heated and vaporized. But if your vape is low on liquid, or that liquid can’t consistently reach the hot coils for any reason (such as dirty coils), then the coils will heat up without evaporating much at all, leading to a burned taste instead of flavorful hit. [1]
    • Check your Elf Bar’s puff count on the packaging to see how long it lasts. You might be past that number, meaning it’s time for a new one (or a refill).
  2. This can happen for a couple reasons. Most likely, you may be chain vaping, or taking many puffs in rapid succession, which overworks the coils and causes the liquid to evaporate too quickly, making for bare coils and a burnt flavor. Otherwise, you may have your high wattage setting enabled. While high wattage may make for bigger hits, it also makes the coils work overtime, and can lead to burning. [2]
    • This might also happen if you just took the vape off its charger, when the voltage is highest.

  3. It’s a bummer, but as with any mass-manufactured product, some faulty models sneak past quality control when they should’ve been tossed at the factory. If, after you’ve tried the solutions in this article to fix your vape , your Elf Bar still gives you burnt-tasting puffs, consider tossing it yourself, or taking it back to the store for a refund or a return. Just be sure you have a receipt! [3]
    • Alternatively, Elf Bar often offers returns on products within 12 months of purchase. Hit up their warranty claim page to open a return request.

Refilling Your Vape to Fix Burnt Tastes

  1. While it may not be the cause of a burnt taste, exactly, a dirty mouthpiece can still lend some funk to your pulls, which may be contributing to your experience. [4] Clean the mouthpiece of your vape by wiping it down with a cotton swab dampened with warm water. Wipe down the outside, as well as far as you can reach into the inside. [5]
  2. Not all disposable vapes or Elf Bars can be disassembled, but taking it apart can help remedy the burnt taste problem. [6] Gently but firmly pull on the mouthpiece and check for any movement. If you’re able to remove it, also gently remove the internals, including the coils, battery, and spongy pad that holds the vape liquid.
    • Wear disposable gloves to avoid getting any vape juice on your hands while you take your vape apart.
    • Note that disassembling your disposable vape may void its warranty. If you’re uncomfortable doing so, opt for a return or a refund, instead.
  3. Your vape may taste burnt if it’s lacking vape liquid. The cotton pad inside your vape stores vape liquid to coat the coil. If it’s dry, you’re probably out of juice. Drip refill vape liquid onto the cotton a little at a time until the cotton is thoroughly saturated. [7] Be careful not to overfill the vape, or fill it until the liquid pools at the bottom, which may cause a malfunction.
    • Use vape liquid compatible with your vape, or from the same brand as your vape. To find compatibility, check your vape’s packaging for instructions.
    • Use low-sugar vape liquid to avoid further burning taste. Sometimes, the high sugar content is burned by the coil, contributing to that flavor. [8]
  4. Replace the internal parts into the vape case as you found them. Then, it’s best to let the vape sit for an hour or two to let the vape liquid settle and saturate the cotton inside. After, take a couple of short, shallow inhales on the vape, for only about half a second each. Do this again 30 minutes to an hour later, then wait another 30 minutes before you get back to making monster clouds. [9]

Preventing Burnt Tastes

  1. “Chain vaping,” or taking hits off the Elf Bar in rapid succession, can overwork and overheat your coils. [10] Allow 1-2 minutes in between puffs to let the coils cool, rather than taking many hits in a small time frame. You might even carry 2 vapes and alternate, if you’re really going at it.
  2. Just like taking too many puffs can overwork your coils, taking puffs that are too deep can make that internal heating element work too hard. Try to take puffs that last only 1-2 seconds on your disposable vape, rather than those mega hits, to prolong its lifespan.
  3. If your vape has a high-voltage setting, using that setting too frequently can burn out your coils. If you can, set your vape to a lower wattage to prevent burnt tastes. [11] This function varies by vape, so consult your Elf Bar’s packaging for wattage setting instructions.
    • Or, use the high-wattage setting for only 1 puff at a time, then take the next few puffs on a lower wattage.
  4. When your vape is fresh off the charger, it sometimes has a slightly higher voltage that makes the coils get hotter, which may be the cause of your burnt flavor. Give your vape 2-3 minutes to soak in that charge before you take a puff to avoid getting that high-voltage hit. [12]
    • Or, take a few half-second puffs to drain the battery a bit before you go for those big clouds.
