Super Mario Bros. 3 introduced the concept of flying to the Super Mario Bros. series, which has stuck ever since. To learn how to fly in Super Mario Bros. 3, start reading from step 1.

  1. You usually find them in "?" blocks while in Super Mario form, but you can also get them in Toad Houses. The Tanooki Suit also allows you to fly (and gives you the added ability of being able to turn into a statue), as does the P-Wing (which gives you infinite flight), but both are less common.
  2. While running, you will see a meter on the bottom of the screen fill up. This is the Power Meter.

  3. You'll stop flying after flying for a bit of time (unless you're using the P-Wing to fly), hitting an enemy (and subsequently losing the Super Leaf, Tanooki Suit, or P-Wing power-up), or landing on solid ground.

  • Question
Instead of using a leaf to fly, should I use a P wing?
    Community Answer
It's the same thing, except a P wing lets you fly for that level only.
  • Question
In World 3 of Mario Bros, how do you get into the castle?
    Community Answer
Step onto the castle on the world map and then press either “b” or “a”. You can also skip the castle level entirely using a jujuem cloud.

      Tips

      • Make sure that no enemies are in your path while building up the Power Meter. It's best to do so on a flat path with no obstructions.
      • The P-Wing can only be used for the duration of the level you use it in. After completing the level, it will revert to the effects of the Super Leaf.
      • Use the flying ability to find hidden areas in levels that you wouldn't be able to get to otherwise. Sometimes, you'll be able to find a Warp Whistle.
