10 Fun Facts About Friends
- It wasn’t always called Friends' ! The show’s working titles (before Friends became official) included Insomnia Café , Friends Like Us , and Six of One .
- Phoebe and Chandler were first created to be supporting roles instead of part of the main cast. That’s right—there were originally only supposed to be 4 friends, not the iconic 6!
- David Schwimmer didn’t have to audition at all to play Ross. He’d auditioned the previous year for a different pilot, so creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane already had him in mind for the part.
- Both Jane Lynch and Kathy Griffin auditioned for the role of Phoebe Buffay before it ultimately went to Lisa Kudrow. However, Jane Lynch still made a cameo in the show’s final season as a real estate agent!
- Monica and Joey were supposed to end up together. It’s hard to imagine a show where Monica and Chandler aren’t happily married—but that outcome was actually not the original plan! The show’s creators and writers only went with Monica/Chandler after the audience responded so well to their getting together.
- Bruce Willis guest-starred on the show after losing a bet with Matthew Perry (who was his costar in The Whole Nine Yards ).
- Monica’s apartment was originally #5 but quietly changed to #20 after writers realized that #5 implied her apartment probably wouldn’t be on an upper floor. Similarly, Chandler and Joey’s apartment number was changed from #4 to #19.
- Ross is technically 29 for three years! In seasons 3, 4, and 5, he mentions being 29 (or, at least, not being 30 yet). He’s also got two birthdays in the show: October 18 and some date in December. It seems like Ross Geller really does contain multitudes!
- Gunther actually didn’t have a line until 33 episodes into the show, when he finally said a single word: “Yeah.” He also didn’t even have a name until the middle of the 2nd season!
- Monica’s refrigerator (in her apartment) wasn’t just a set piece. It actually worked—and the cast and crew would keep snacks and drinks there while working. Cool, right?
