Getting the Owlbear Cub

  1. 1
Encounter the Owlbears in the cave. To trigger the events needed to recruit the Owlbear cub, you must first encounter the Owlbear and his mother in the cave on the first map. The cave is located in the forest, near the Blighted Village. There are a few scenarios that can play out; here's how to get through them so you can recruit the Owlbear cub: [1]
    • When encountering the Owlbears in a cutscene, retreat without fighting. If you return after a long rest, you'll see that the Owlbear's mother has been killed and the cub will survive.
      • Avoid sending Brynna and Andrick to clear out the Owlbear nest. If you do so, the Owlbear cub will remain hostile even after his mother is dead. The only way to still get the Owlbear cub is to knock out Brynna and Andrick and flee combat.
    • When encountering the Owlbears, fight the Owlbear's mother and kill her. You'll then be given a chance to spare the cub.
      • If playing in Honor Mode, the Owlbear Mother will summon the Owlbear Mate. If you kill the Owlbear Mother before the Owlbear Mate, you must flee the battle to save the cub, as the cub will turn hostile.
    • If you encounter the Owlbears while in stealth, the meeting cutscene won't show. If you attack the Owlbear Mother, the cub will turn hostile. You must flee the battle to save the cub.
      • You cannot knock the cub down with non-lethal combat. If you do so, the cub won't be recruitable.
  2. 2
Long rest before going to the Goblin Camp. If you go directly from the Owlbear cave to the Goblin Camp, the Owlbear cub won't show up. You must long rest at least once before heading to the Goblin Camp after encountering the Owlbears.

  3. 3
Go to the Goblin Camp. Once you decide to tackle the Goblin Camp, you'll find that the goblins have kidnapped the Owlbear cub and are forcing him into a game of "Chicken Chase." You can convince the Owlbear cub to come to your camp whether or not you play Chicken Chase, but if you want to play the game, you can convince the Owlbear cub to help you win. [2]
    • Using Speak with Animals: Choose one of the following options. You may or may not see some of these options depending on your class and skills:
      • [PERSUASION] See those posts? Run toward them. (DC 15)
      • [RANGER] [DRUID] [ANIMAL HANDLING] They won't hurt you if you run to those posts. (DC 10)
        • Avoid these options, as they will cause the Owlbear cub to attack the goblins, and it will likely die in the process:
          • [BERSERKER] [PERSUASION] The goblins hurt you - CRUSH THEM. (DC 10)
          • [BARBARIAN] [PERSUASION] The goblins tried to hurt you. Show them what hurt really means. (DC 10)
    • Without using Speak with Animals: Choose one of the following options. You may or may not see some of these options depending on your class and skills:
      • [ANIMAL HANDLING] Coax the cub toward the goalposts. (DC 15)
      • [RANGER] [DRUID] [ANIMAL HANDLING] Nod to the goalposts - he'll be safe there. (DC 10)
        • Avoid these options, as they will cause the Owlbear cub to attack the goblins, and it will likely die in the process:
          • [ANIMAL HANDLING] Guide his gaze to the goblins - they deserve to die. (DC 15)
  4. 4
Convince the Owlbear cub to join you. Whether you decide to play the game of Chicken Chase or not, you must convince the Owlbear cub to join your camp. Inviting the Owlbear cub to your camp will give you +1 approval with Gale, Shadowheart, and Wyll.
    • Beckon him closer.
      • Using Speak with Animals: I have a camp. You're welcome there.
      • Without using Speak with Animals: [ANIMAL HANDLING] Kneel down - you won't hurt him. (DC 10)
        • Offer him your hand. He can follow your scent to your camp in the wilderness.
  5. 5
Convince Krolla to give you the Owlbear OR kill all the goblins. Once you've convinced the Owlbear cub to join your camp, you must either convince Krolla to let you take the Owlbear cub with you, or you must kill the goblins in the camp. [3]
    • Convince Krolla: To convince Krolla to let you take the Owlbear cub, you can choose one of the following options. You may not see all of these options depending on your class and/or skills.
      • [INTIMIDATION] You love this game enough to die over it? (DC 10)
      • [BERSERKER] [INTIMIDATION] ROAR. (DC 10 with advantage)
      • [BARBARIAN] [INTIMIDATION] Feel differently? How about you feel dead? (DC 10 with advantage)
      • [DRUID] [PERSUASION] I'd be doing you a favour. The beast will only get bigger - and tougher. (DC 5 with advantage)
      • [ILLITHID] [WISDOM] I don't care what you think. I'm not asking. (DC 5)
      • [PERSUASION] I'd be doing you a favour. Keeping such a large beast fed isn't easy. (DC 10)
      • I'm saying I want to buy it. (500 gold)
    • Kill the goblins: You can also choose to kill all of the goblins to free the Owlbear cub.
      • When fighting the goblins, do not summon Lump the Enlightened to fight in the exterior of the Goblin Camp while the Owlbear cub is present. If you do so, the Owlbear cub will become hostile towards the Ogres and the party. If this happens, the Owlbear cub will not come to the camp.
  6. 6
Long rest. The Owlbear cub will show up in your camp after rescuing him from the Goblin Camp. It may take a few long rests for the Owlbear cub to show up.
    • You must recruit the Owlbear cub before going to Baldur's Gate at the end of Act 2.
  7. 7
Feed the Owlbear cub. The first time you see the Owlbear cub after the Goblin Camp, he'll show up in your camp looking for food. You must give him food and keep your distance in order to earn his trust. Offering food to the Owlbear cub will get you +1 approval with Astarion, Gale, Karlach, Shadowheart, and Wyll. Pick one of these options: [4]
    • Using Speak with Animals:
      • I have food. Would you like it? (Your party must have food to see this option.)
        • Go ahead. Eat.
        • Come on, then. Take it.
        • On second thought, I'll have it myself.
      • Are you injured?
        • You are strong. (This will befriend the Owlbear cub.)
        • You don't look very strong to me.
          • [ACROBATICS] Step away from the beast. (DC 10)
          • [PERSUASION] No, you will not bite. (DC 10)
    • Without using Speak with Animals:
      • Fetch a piece of food from your bag. (Your party must have food to see this option.)
        • Toss the food to the owlbear.
        • Keep the food held out in front of you.
        • Eat the food.
      • [ANIMAL HANDLING] Wait for him to approach you. (DC 10)
      • [ANIMAL HANDLING] Beckon him closer. (DC 10)
      • Keep your distance. (This will befriend the Owlbear cub.)
      • Move closer.
    • If the Owlbear looks like it's going to charge, choose "[PERFORMANCE] Hoot softly to calm him down. (DC 10)" to calm him down and become his friend. You can also choose "[DEXTERITY] Move out of the way. (DC 10)" to avoid combat.
  8. 8
Help the injured Owlbear cub. The second time you see the Owlbear cub, he will be injured. If you're not using Speak with Animals, helping the Owlbear cub will get you +1 approval with Gale, Karlach, Shadowheart, and Wyll. Pick these options: [5]
    • Using Speak with Animals:
      • If you didn't befriend the Owlbear:
        • [PERSUASION] You're hurt. Let me see. (DC 5)
        • [PERSUASION] I can help you. Just stay calm. (DC 10)
        • [DECEPTION] Let me see, or the leg will fall off and I'll eat it for dinner. (DC 5)
        • [INTIMIDATION] Behave, or you'll end up like mother. (DC 15)
        • [BERSERKER] [INTIMIDATION] SHOW ME. (DC 15 with advantage)
        • [BARBARIAN] [INTIMIDATION] Show. Me. Now. (DC 15 with advantage)
      • If you befriended the Owlbear:
        • [MEDICINE] Hold still. I'll make it better. (DC 5)
        • [PERSUASION] It's barely a scratch. You'll be fine. (DC 5)
        • [SURVIVAL] Come here. I'll clean it for you. (DC 5)
    • Without using Speak with Animals:
      • If you didn't befriend the Owlbear:
        • [ANIMAL HANDLING] Whisper to calm the creature. (DC 10)
      • If you befriended the Owlbear or after calming him:
        • [NATURE] Inspect his wound. (DC 10)
        • [MEDICINE] Attempt to heal the injury. (DC 10)
        • [SURVIVAL] Try cleaning the wound. (DC 10)
    • After passing this final check, the Owlbear cub will now be a camp companion.
