With the 2.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, five new crops and vegetables (wheat, sugarcane, carrots, tomatoes, and potatoes) have been added to the game, which you can grow and harvest. After that, the crops can be used in a couple of ways... But how exactly do you get these crops? Read on to find out!

Steps

  1. Because the crops/farming was added in that update, you won't be able to access this feature without downloading it. When you click on the game to play, it should tell you that there is a new update available for downloading, and you'll be able to download it. If you don't see that, select the game and press +. You'll see a screen with a bunch of options. Scroll to the "Software Update" section and select "Via the internet" you should then be directed to a download screen.
    • Make sure you have enough free memory to download the update. The update is pretty big, so it'll take up a good chunk of memory.
  2. You won't be able to grow then if there isn't a place to put them! Clear out an area where you want your garden to be. Add in some fencing or create a border on the ground with pathing to mark off the area of land you are going to use. From here, it's up to you whether you want to keep your garden simple or decorate it.
    • If you have already prepared an area for a garden, feel free to skip this step.
    • If you want your garden to look pretty, try adding some cute fencing around the border of your garden, or some cute garden-related items.
    • Garden-related items include things like the bunny statue, the tin bucket, a shovel, a watering can, the veggie basket (Which you can craft using your new crops), and the wheat-field item.

  3. To obtain them, try one of the following methods:
    • Buying them from Leif. To buy some crop starts from Leif, first, you have to find him. He will show up on your island once in a while, and will also be at Harvey's island (But only if you've unlocked him). Every week, he'll have two different crop starts to sell. If they are the kind you want, buy them. If they aren't the kind you want, you'll have to keep waiting.
    • You can also obtain crop starts by going on one of Kapp'n's mystery island tours. Kapp'n is the person who shows up on your dock every day. Talk to him, and he'll bring you to a special mystery island for 1,000 nook miles. If you are lucky, you may find an island full of crops. Pick these up with your shovel to bring back home. Not only do you now have crops, but you can skip the next couple of steps waiting for them to grow!
  4. Head over to your garden and stand in the place where you want your crops to grow. Open your inventory and click on one of the crop starts. Click "plant". The crop should now be planted directly underneath you. Move over, and repeat the process until your garden is full of the crop starts.
    • If you want to be more controlled on where you plant the crops or get your crops from a Kapp'n tour, you will need to equip your shovel and dig a hole right in the place where you want your crops. Then, open your inventory while next to the hole, and click plant, just like above!
  5. While this step isn't exactly necessary for growing crops, it will help you grow a lot more of them. You just need to craft or purchase a watering can, and remember to water your crops every day. It's that simple!
    • Think of it this way. For every day you water your crops, you will get one more for that crop per plant/start. If you don't water your crops at all, you will only get one of the crops. But if you want them 2+ times, you'll get three of that crop.
  6. The crops will grow in a 4-stage cycle. On the day you plant them, they will look like little seedlings, just sprouts in the ground. On the second day, they will be a little taller and larger. By the third day, they will have grown some more, and you will even see tiny, unripe versions of the crop. By the fourth day, your crops will have fully grown and matured. They are now ready for picking.
    • If you don't want to wait, you can alter your switches settings and time travel instead. However, note that this may cause other unwanted things on your island (For example, you might get weeds.)
  7. This one is pretty self-explanatory. Simply walk up to your crops, and treat them as if you are picking up any other item. Just press Y, and the crops will automatically be picked and placed in your inventory.
    • Depending on if you watered your crops or not, you will get 1-3 of the crop when you pick it.
  8. Even more crops will grow in the place of the ones you've picked, so you don't need to replace them—you can just keep watering them and repeating the cycle as many times as you want.
    • Once again, this is an unnecessary step, but it will increase the number of crops you obtain, so you should do it if you are looking to be collecting a lot of crops.
  9. Depending on the situation you may or may not have gotten the number of crops that you wanted when you first started making your garden. If the latter, there are a few ways you can do it, the first being simply repeating the above steps to get more crops. However, there is a simpler way. Just pick a couple of crops from your existing garden, dig a hole, and plant the crop. In a few days, the crops will grow, and you'll have an even bigger garden.
    • If you watered your crops, you can pick them all, and replant them, this time more than there were before. Keep doing this, and eventually, you'll have so many crops you won't know what to do with them.
  10. While the main use for crops is, of course, being used in recipes from the new cooking update, you can also use them for decoration, selling or to eating raw. It's up to you!
