The blooms of gazania (African daisies or treasure flower) are brightly colored daisies, a favorite flower form. Gazania ( Gazania rigens ) flowers are commonly yellow, orange to gold plus new varieties come in creams, whites and dark reds. [1] These plants in the aster family are native to South Africa.

  1. Garden gazania is a clumping perennial that grows about 20-30 cm (8-12") in height and width, in regions with no frost.
    • In temperate climates, gazania is grown as an annual.
    • Gazania is grown in full sun in warm temperatures. The flowers close at night.
    • Flowers do not open well if grown in shady gardens.
  2. This plant cannot be water-logged.
    • Add compost or other organic matter to the garden soil every year.
    • Use organic mulch to reduce weeds, conserve moisture in the soil and reduce soil temperatures.

  3. Follow with deep but infrequent watering. The soil should be allowed to partially dry out between watering. Once this plant is established, it is fairly drought tolerant.
    • Apply approximately 2.5 cm (1") of water each week through rainfall or irrigation.
    • A water soluble fertilizer is the easiest to use for fertilizing gazania in the garden or in containers.
    • Apply every 2-3 weeks for pots and other containers and every 4-6 weeks in the garden.
  4. The seed should be planted in early spring, the seedlings in late spring. If planting seeds, use a peat and sand mix and expect the seeds to germinate in around two to three weeks.
