  • How Many Brain Cells Do You Actually Have?

The average human brain has approximately 86 billion neurons, or nerve cells. [1] There are other types of cells in your brain, but neurons are the cells responsible for sending messages all over you body to allow you to do things like thinking, talking, walking, and eating. [2]

    Types of Neurons

    • Sensory Neurons: Carry information from sense organs like your eyes and your ears to the brain, which allows you to see and hear.
    • Motor Neurons: Carry messages from nerve cells in the brain to your muscles, which allows you to do things like walk and talk.
    • Interneurons: Make connections between motor neurons and sensory neurons. [3]

Other Types of Cells in the Brain

    • Aside from neurons, the brain is also made up of support cells called glia. Glia provide structure in the brain, and there are three different subtypes of them (oligodendrocytes, microglia, and astrocytes). [4]
