Procreate is an app available for iOS users that allows you to create digital drawings. Artists most commonly use it for illustrations because procreate offers a variety of customization options. One of those options are the brushes. On top of the array of brushes provided by Procreate, you can also create your own brush from scratch to match your art style. You get to choose the shape, texture, size, opacity, and more. This wikiHow walks you through all the customizing options to make your own brush.
Steps
-
Click on the "Brush" icon. You can find this on the top-right corner. This will open a menu with all your brushes.
-

-
Click on the "Shape" tab. It is the 4th tab under "Brush Studio" found on the left side of the screen.
-
Pick a shape for your brush. The default shape is a hard circle.
- If you would like to change that, click the "edit" button found above the current shape.
- Then, click the "import" option found under "Shape Editor".
- Here you can choose to pick a shape from the “Source Library” provided by Procreate or import a brush shape on your own using the “Import a photo” or “Import a file” option. If this is your first time making a brush, look through the options procreate provides. There are a lot to choose from.
- Once you are satisfied with the shape click yellow "Done" button on the top right corner.
-
Click on the “Grain” tab. It is the 5th tab under "Brush Studio" found on the left side of the screen. Here you will choose the texture of your brush.
-
Pick a grain for your brush. The default grain has no texture.
- If you would like to change that, click the "edit" button found above the current shape.
- Then, click the "import" option found under "Grain Editor".
- Here you can choose to pick a grain from the “Source Library” provided by Procreate or import a grain on your own using the “Import a photo” or “Import a file” option. If this is your first time making a brush, look through the options procreate provides.
- Once you are satisfied with the shape click yellow "Done" button on the top right corner.
-
Adjust the texture of the brush. Under the “Grain Behavior”, there are multiple options to modify the texture.
- Movement will determine how much the grain will “drag” with each stroke.
- Scale/Zoom will determine how large the grain will be.
- Rotation will determine the tilt of the texture.
- Depth will determine how opaque the texture will be. Lower the depth, more opaque the brush texture.
-
Click on the “Rendering” tab. It is the 6th tab under "Brush Studio" found on the left side of the screen. Here you can choose one of 6 rendering methods. They will determine how each brush stroke will layer. Try out each mode, and see what fits your style.
-
Click on the “Dynamics” tab. It is the 9th tab under "Brush Studio" found on the left side of the screen.
-
Adjust the size and opacity of your brush. Under the “Speed” tab, you can adjust how much the speed of your stroke will affect the size and opacity of your brush.
- If your stylus does not have pressure sensitivity, using speed dynamics to give variation in size and opacity will be a good substitute.
-
Click on the “Apple Pencil” tab. It is the 11th tab under "Brush Studio" found on the left side of the screen.
-
Adjust sensitivity settings. This step only applies for those who have an Apple Pencil.
- Under "Pressure", adjust how sensitive you want the size, opacity, and flow to be with the pen pressure.
- Under "Tilt", adjust how you want the tilt of your stylus to affect the opacity and size of the brush.
-
Click on the “Properties” tab. It is the 10th tab under "Brush Studio" found on the left side of the screen. Here you can adjust the maximum and minimum size and opacity of your brush.
- For a lineart brush, it is recommended to have a lower maximum size and greater maximum opacity.
-
Click on the “Stabilization” tab. It is the 2nd tab under "Brush Studio" found on the left side of the screen. Here you can stabilize your brush by adjusting the “Amount” setting under “StreamLine” or “Stabilization”.
- They both serve the same purpose, choosing one of the two is a personal preference.
