A spellbook is a book that contains instructions on how to make magical objects, cast magical spells, and summon or invoke mystic entities. The first thing to do is think about the type of design you want. There are various designs and ways to create a spellbook. Choose a design that you can create with items that you have. Once you've come up with a design, this article will show you how to create a fun spellbook prop to complete your witch or Halloween costume.
Steps
-
Find a blank book. Find a blank, empty book (preferably, a blank book with a dark cover) or a dark colored book you don't want anymore.
-
2Glue small plastic creatures onto the book. These can be plastic worm/snakes, plastic spiders, fake eyeballs, plastic bats, plastic bugs, or any spooky and small plastic creature. These plastic pieces can be found at dollar stores during October.Advertisement

3Add a few foam letters or scrapbook letters (optional). This is optional, but you can place puffy foam sticker letters on your book to create a phrase or word on the book. A couple phrases you could write out with the foam letters are:
- Enchantments and Spells
- Hexes and Spells; or Witches and Spells
- Book of Spells
- Enchanting Spells
- Mystical Spells
-
Get (preferably black) tissue paper and apply it to the front of the book with Mod Podge. After placing your small spiders/bugs/worms and foam letters to the book, get a wide brush and paint over the whole front of the book with Mod Podge, then apply the tissue paper. There should be some 'wrinkles' when you apply this tissue paper or paper towel--this makes the book look old, antique, realistic, and adds a bit of character.
- If you will be using a brooch or charm, do not glue it on yet. This will be done in the last step.
- If there is any excess paper towel or tissue paper hanging off the side of the book, glue it inside the edge of the book.
- Don't use glue instead of Mod Podge, the tissue paper is too thin and delicate to be glued. If you don't have Mod Podge, use the alternate option with paper towels or make your own Mod Podge.
Alternate Option : If you don't have Mod Podge or tissue paper, no worries! Instead, get a 1-Ply paper towel, spray it with water, and gently apply it to the front of the book.
-
5Paint the whole front of the book black. Use a wide brush and paint the whole front of your spellbook black.
-
Paint over your details with greens, olive, reds, and other dark colors. Paint over your small plastic creatures and foam letters to make them stand out. The colors you should use shouldn't be bright, aim for dark reds, greens, browns, metallics, yellows, etc. Use a fine point brush to go over your plastic creatures, crevices/wrinkles and foam letters to make the small details stand out.
-
7Pick a flat charm to place on your spellbook and apply it in the center (optional). This can be a flat brooch, piece of costume jewelry, or a flat charm. If you are using brooch or charm, hot glue it onto the top of your book now.
- You can also use a bit of metallic paint on the edges your brooch or charm to make it look vintage.
