Expert Tips for Hosting Trivia Night
-
1Start out the easy way by hosting a game of Trivial Pursuit. Cohen recommends starting with a game like Trivial Pursuit . “You can use that as a starting point. Offer to host something at someone's house… gather 20 people, split them into four or five teams, and play in a living room or backyard if it's warm.” A few other top trivia board games are:
-
2Give a clue for the tougher questions to make trivia night more fun. According to Cohen, you should always have clues ready for the more challenging questions. “People love feeling smart when they solve a tricky clue.”
- Cohen recommends making your clues funny instead of giving a dry fact.
-
3Ask a tie-breaker question with a numerical answer. “When there is a tie, I ask a ‘break-the-tie’ question, which typically has a numerical answer,” suggests Cohen. “For example, I might ask how many number-one songs the Beatles had. If one team guesses 17 and another guesses 42, the team that guessed 17 wins because 20 is closer to 17 than 42.”
- To avoid disputes, make sure to specify the source of your answers, adds Cohen.
- It’s not as important to worry about sources if you’re playing a board game.
-
4Take breaks to keep the competition friendly. Cohen explains, “Some people love pure trivia and just want question after question. But the reality is, people… want to have a good time.” Try playing rounds of 10 questions and then take a short bathroom break.
- Schedule a longer break in the middle of the game to give people a chance to relax and have a snack or get some fresh air.
-
5Ask funny trivia questions for a more relaxed vibe. Cohen says, “I think the [trivia questions] that are funny are very good because people want to laugh.” In the end, trivia night is about having fun. Plus, laughing is a great way to lower the tension when competition gets a little too intense.
