Ever since the 2.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons that was launched on November 5, 2021, the long-awaited Roost was finally added into the game. The Roost is a coffee shop run by Brewster, the gyroid-collecting pigeon. The café is located in the museum, and is a great place to stop by for a coffee break. However, before you can do that, you have to unlock it first. But how, might you ask, does one unlock it? Read on to find out!

Steps

  1. Because the Roost was added in that update, you won't be able to access the Roost without downloading it. When you click on the game to play, it should tell you that there is a new update available for download, and you'll be able to download it. If you don't see that, select the game and press + . You'll see a screen with a bunch of options. Scroll to the Software Update section and select Via the internet you should then be directed to a download screen.
    • Make sure you have enough free memory to download the update. The update is pretty big, so it'll take up a good chunk of memory.
  2. To open it, you must do the following:
    • Open the art wing of the museum. Once you've donated a total of 60 things to the museum, Blathers will talk about opening an art museum. At the same time, Jolly Redd be on your island, and he will sell you a painting, which you can donate to Blathers. Wait two days, and the art wing should be complete.
    • Donate at least one item to each section of the museum. This is fairly easy-since you've already opened the art wing, you only have to donate one fish, one bug, and one fossil, if you haven't already done so.
    • Have a three-star island rating. This isn't that hard, but you may need to spend some time on your island decorating and pulling weeds. But soon enough, when you talk to Isabelle, you'll get a three-star rating.

  3. You should see Blathers with a thought bubble above this head, much like the thought bubbles you see over the heads of your villagers. Talk to him, and he will tell you about how he's interested in having his friend Brewster open a café in the museum, but he can't seem to contact him. The only lead you have is the fact that Brewster is a gyroid collector. He will then ask you if you'll find him. Say yes, and he'll thank you, and you can be on your way.
  4. Kappin' is the guy who hangs out on a boat at your dock- you may have seen him before. Talk to him, and he'll offer to bring you to a special island tour for 1,000 Nook Miles. Accept his offer. You'll then be seen climbing into a boat and leaving the dock. On the way there, Kappin' will sing some sea shanties. He'll sing two of them before you arrive to your destination. You'll know you're there once you arrive at an island.
    • If you don't have enough Nook Miles, you can get some fast by completing a couple of Nook Miles + goals.
  5. He will be wandering around the island, most likely near the gyroid dig spot. If you don't see him at first, try looking around a bit, as he could be simply hidden from view. When you find him, talk with him and explain how Blathers wants to open a coffee shop, and how you were looking for Brewster. He will tell you that he is Brewster, and he will agree to open a coffee shop on your island (though you may have to talk to him a couple of times).
    • Additionally, he will also give you instructions on how to plant and water gyroids. He will even give you a gyroid fragment he found earlier.
  6. Let him know that you found Brewster, and that he agreed to open a café. Blathers will thank you and let you know that construction on the new addition for the museum will begin right away.
  7. Once you've talked to Blathers, you will need to wait two more days for the Roost to open. You need to wait for the rest of the current day, then another day for the construction to happen. On the third day, the Roost will be fully opened, and Isabelle should say so in the morning announcements.
    • If you don't want to wait for the Roost to open, you can use time travel to skip head. just know that your island might be covered in weeds if you skip ahead too many days, and you might even get cockroaches in your house.
  8. Talk to Blathers again, and he will explain where the Roost is and thank you again. Then, walk up the stairs and you should see a new entrance on the left side. This is the entrance to the Roost. Walk inside, and you'll be able to see the café and talk to Brewster.
    • Once the Roost opens, you can also talk to Tom Nook to host a celebration for the new café if you would like to.
  9. You can stop by to get coffee, and even invite villagers and other characters via amiibo. The Roost, like the museum, is open 24/7, so you can pop in for a visit whenever you want. You might even get special prizes for visiting the Roost often.
