Preparing for the Game with Cards

  1. Then, replace one Ace and one King in the deck. Leave the other Aces, Kings, and Jokers out. [1]
  2. Depending on how many people are playing the game , you all may not have the same amount of cards. This is fine.

  3. In “Murder in the Dark”, holding a certain card means you will play a certain role in the game.
    • The person who is dealt the Ace is the murderer.
    • The person who is dealt the King is the police officer.
    • The person who is dealt the Jack is the detective.
    • If the person who has the Jack “dies”, the person who has the King becomes the detective.
    • If the person(s) who have the Jack or the King both “die”, the person who has the Queen becomes the detective.
    • However, remind everyone that they should keep whichever cards they have secret so no one knows who is the murderer, the police officer, or the detective.

Preparing for the Game with Pieces of Paper

  1. Make enough slips for each person playing. Try to make them small enough so its difficult to read what is on them from far away. [2]
  2. You will need to write a slip for: [3]
    • “Murderer”
    • “Detective”
    • On the rest of the slips of paper, write “suspect”.
  3. Have each player take one. Remind everyone not to reveal who they are going to play in the game.

Playing the Game

  1. You don’t want to bump into anything that will injury you when you’re walking around in the dark!
  2. Instruct the players to walk carefully around the room and avoid sticking together or huddling in one area. [4]
  3. The murderer will go around the room, find someone, and tap them on the shoulder to let them know they are now a victim.
    • The murderer can also whisper quietly "you're dead" to the victim.
    • Alternatively, the murderer could clamp their hand over the person’s mouth to prevent the person from screaming, and then whisper "you're dead".
    • The ‘victims’ can fall down dramatically or make dramatic dying noises. Try to be as dramatic and silly as possible.
  4. Scream out “Murder in the dark!” once you come across someone who has been murdered. As soon as someone says this, the player closest to the lights should turn them on. [5]
    • If a player sees someone standing silently alone, they can ask them, "Are you dead?" The player should simply indicate yes or no, but they must tell the truth so it is clear whether or not you can yell out “Murder in the Dark!”
    • One trick the murderer could try is hiding the person they just killed in a hiding place in the room or in another room. If the murderer successfully hides the people they “kill”, it will take longer for someone to discover the victims and allow them to “kill” people longer.
    • However, this tactic could allow the murderer to get caught more easily as they are distracted with dealing with the “bodies”.
    • Vote on whether the murderer is allowed to use this tactic as a house rule before you start the game.
  5. Any players who are not present should be noted as dead.
    • As an extra to the game, you could try to find all the dead players in their hiding places and bring them into the room.
  6. This step in the game could be as simple as one guess or as complicated as a question and answer session where the detective tries to solve the murder. [6]
    • The role of the police officer is to enforce order while the detective tries to solve the murder.
    • If you decide to do a pretend Q&A, have the detective sit in a chair in front of everyone and ask questions to all the alive players, such as: Where were you when someone yelled “Murder in the Dark”? Who do you think is the murderer and why?
    • Once the detective has gathered enough information and decided who they suspect is the murderer, they say: “final accusation” and ask their suspect, “Are you the murderer?”
    • If the detective guesses who the murderer is successfully, they win the game. But if they guess incorrectly, the murderer wins the game.
    • If the detective is killed by the murderer during the killing spree in the dark, they can be replaced by whoever had the King card. [7]
    • If you are not using cards for the game and the detective is killed during the murder in the dark, the game is over and can start all over again.
  7. They can do this by showing the Ace card. [8]

  • Question
How many people do I need for this game?
    Community Answer
You will need at least five people. The more people there are, the more challenging the game will be.
  • Question
Does there have to be a police officer?
    Community Answer
No there doesn't -- as long as you have a detective because someone has to pick who the murderer is.
  • Question
If you have been 'killed,' is it best to actually act as if you're dead by lying on the ground, or should you just sit somewhere so someone can ask if you're dead?
    Community Answer
Either would be okay, but it would be easier if you were lying on the ground.

      Tips

      • A way to also tell hem they're dead is to pretend to stab them softly in the chest which is silent enough.
      • Avoid sticking together when you are playing in the dark. This will make it more difficult for the murderer to kill anyone in the group and make the game less exciting.
      • Instead of doing the whole "Detective" routine, you could have all players, excluding the dead people, participate in a mafia-game style voting session. All players should say where they were and who they saw at the time of the murder. Then, the players should nominate a few people who they think is the murderer, (the choice must be seconded) and all players vote on one. The person who receives the most votes must reveal if they are the murderer. If they are falsely accused, you may continue another round of the game.

      Warnings

      • The murderer clamping his hand over people's mouths and saying 'you're dead' may scare some people, especially in the dark. So make sure all players can handle being scared in the dark before playing the game.
      • Be sure to let your eyes adjust to the dark at least thirty seconds before wandering around the room to prevent anyone from hurting themselves.
      • When you're walking be careful of people that have died and maybe be lying on the floor.

      About This Article

      Article Summary X

Murder in the Dark is a fun group game where players get assigned character roles then try to solve a murder. Start by removing all the Jokers, Aces, and Kings from your deck of cards, then adding one of each back into the deck. Shuffle and deal all of the cards. The person who gets the Ace is the murderer, the person who gets the King is the police officer, and the person who gets the Jack is the detective. If you don't pull one of these cards, then you are one of the crowd who are trying to not get murdered. Once everyone knows their role, turn out the lights so everyone can walk around while the murderer finds victims, tapping them as they’re found. If you're tapped, you'll need to sit or stand still. When someone finds you, they should scream out “Murder in the dark!” Then, the player closest to the light switch can turn it on. Gather all of the alive players so the detective can interview them and try to figure out who the murderer is while the police officer keeps the peace. If the detective guesses the right person, they win. But if they guess wrong, the murderer wins. To learn how to play Murder in the Dark without a deck of cards, keep reading!
