In English, Spanish (en español), or any other language, the Rosary (el Rosario) is one of the most beautiful and most revered prayers in the Roman Catholic Church. It involves repeating a series of prayers and meditating on a series of sacred Mysteries (misterios), ideally while tracking your progress on a string of Rosary beads. We’ve provided a complete guide to the Rosary, including both English and Spanish texts, so you can benefit from reciting this powerful and beloved prayer.

Introduction

  1. If you have a string of Rosary beads to use as you pray the Rosary , hold it in your left hand with the crucifix between your fingers. To make the Sign of the Cross (la señal de la cruz), touch your hand to your forehead, sternum, left shoulder, and right shoulder. While doing so, say the following: [1]
    • English: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
  2. Keep holding the crucifix between your fingers, bow your head slightly, and say the following: [3]
    • English: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into Hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; He shall come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

  3. Slide your fingers up from the crucifix to the first large bead on the string, then recite the Our Father (Padre nuestro)—also called the Lord’s Prayer (orador del Señor)—as follows: [5]
    • English: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
  4. Slide your fingers from one bead to the next with each recitation of the prayer. Pray with the intention of an increase in faith, hope, and love, respectively, as you recite the Hail Mary (Ave María) three times. [7]
    • English: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
  5. Pinch the string between the previous three smaller beads and the next larger bead. Alternatively, it’s okay to slide your fingers up to the next large bead and keep it there until you complete the Our Father during the First Decade. [9]
    • English: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

First Decade

  1. There are four sets of Mysteries—key events from the lives of Jesus and Mary—that are associated with days of the week: Joyful Mysteries (Monday and Saturday); Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesday and Friday); Glorious Mysteries (Wednesday and Sunday); and Luminous Mysteries (Thursday). Each Mystery has five events associated with it, one for each Decade of the Rosary. Announce the First Mystery for the relevant day, either aloud or silently to yourself. [11]
    • “The First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation of Gabriel to Mary.” (Luke 1:26-38)
    • “El primer Misterio Gozoso: La Anunciación de Gabriel a María”. (Lucas 1:26-38)
    • “The First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony of Our Lord in the Garden.” (Matthew 26:36-56)
    • “El Primer Misterio Doloroso: La Agonía de Nuestro Señor en el Huerto”. (Mateo 26:36-56)
    • “The First Glorious Mystery: The Glorious Resurrection of Our Lord.” (John 20:1-29)
    • “El Primer Misterio Glorioso: La Gloriosa Resurrección de Nuestro Señor”. (Juan 20:1-29)
    • “The First Luminous Mystery: The Baptism of Our Lord in the River Jordan.” (Matthew 3:13-16)
    • “El Primer Misterio Luminoso: El Bautismo de Nuestro Señor en el Río Jordán”. (Mateo 3:13-16)
  2. Slide your fingers up to this large bead if you’ve had them on the string between the beads, or just remain on the large bead if you were already there. [12]
Amen.
  3. Slide your fingers past the pendant and to the first bead above and to the right of it. Say a Hail Mary, slide to the next small bead, repeat, and keep going. [14]
    • English: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
  4. Slide your fingers onto the gap between the beads, then say the Glory Be. The Fátima Prayer (oración de Fátima) is optional but typically said right after the Glory Be. [16]
    • English: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
    • English: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy. Amen.

  1. Keep your fingers on the gap between the beads. If you announced the First Joyful Mystery during the First Decade, for example, annonce the Second Joyful Mystery this time. [18]
    • “The Second Joyful Mystery: The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth.” (Luke 1:39-56)
    • “El Segundo Misterio Gozoso: La Visitación de María a Isabel”. (Lucas 1:39-56)
    • “The Second Sorrowful Mystery: Our Lord is Scourged at the Pillar.” (Matthew 27:26)
    • “El Segundo Misterio Doloroso: Nuestro Señor es Flagelado en el Pilar”. (Mateo 27:26)
    • “The Second Glorious Mystery: The Ascension of Our Lord.” (Luke 24:36-53)

    • “El Segundo Misterio Luminoso: Las Bodas de Caná, cuando Cristo se manifestó”. (Juan 2:1-11)
  2. Slide your fingers onto the large bead and pray the Our Father. Then, go to each of the ten following beads and pray 10 Hail Marys. Slide to the gap between the beads and pray the Glory Be and the (optional but common) Fátima Prayer. [19]
Amen.
    • English: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

  1. Before sliding your fingers to the next bead, say or meditate upon one of the following: [21]
    • “The Third Joyful Mystery: The Birth (Nativity) of Our Lord.” (Luke 2:1-21)
    • “El Tercer Misterio Gozoso: El Nacimiento (Natividad) de Nuestro Señor.” (Lucas 2:1-21)
    • “The Third Sorrowful Mystery: Our Lord is Crowned with Thorns.” (Matthew 27:27-31)
    • “El Tercer Misterio Doloroso: Nuestro Señor es Coronado de Espinas”. (Mateo 27:27-31)

    • “El Tercer Misterio Luminoso: La Proclamación del Reino de Dios”. (Marcos 1:14-15)
  2. If you’ve sensed a pattern here, you’re right! It’s one Our Father on the large bead, ten Hail Marys on the small beads, and a Glory Be and the optional Fátima Prayer on the space before the next large bead. [22]
Amen.
    • English: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

  2. There’s only one small difference here compared to the other decades—touch your fingers to the pendant as you recite the Glory Be and the optional Fátima Prayer. [28]
Amen.

Conclusion

PDF download Download Article
  1. Keep your fingers on the pendant for the entire conclusion to the Rosary. Recite one Hail Holy Queen (Salve Santa Reina) as follows: [30]
    • English: Hail Holy Queen, mother of mercy; hail our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us. And after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.
  2. While technically optional, the Final Rosary Prayer (rezo final del Rosario) is a very common part of the conclusion. Say the following: [32]
    • English: O God, whose only-begotten Son by His Life, Death and Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that by meditating upon these Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
  3. This is a less-used finishing touch that you can recite instead of or in combination with the Final Rosary Prayer. [34]
    • English: Remember, O Most Gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, Our Mother. To thee we come, before thee we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer them. Amen.
  4. The Litany of Loreto (Letanía de Loreto) is a rather lengthy list of prayers in call-and-response format that you can recite along with or instead of the Final Rosary Prayer and/or the Memorare.
  5. You might, for example, keep holding the pendant and add one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be as prayers for physical and spiritual blessings for the Pope (Papa). You can add another set of the same prayers for the intentions of the dead, such as for deceased loved ones or souls in Purgatory (Purgatorio).
  6. Finish the Rosary in the same way you started it. Touch your forehead, sternum, left shoulder, and right shoulder while saying the following: [35]
    • English: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
