5 Bizarre Facts about Our Presidents

Did you know…

1. ...George Washington’s teeth were not made of wood? You’ve probably heard the first president had wooden teeth, but in fact, his dentures were made of ivory, gold, and human and animal teeth (among other non-wood materials). It's possible some of the human teeth in his dentures were taken from enslaved peoples, but not confirmed.

2. ...legend has it that Anne Royall stole John Quincy Adams’ clothes to get him to agree to an interview? According to the story, Anne Royall discovered our sixth president during one of his typical early morning nude swims in the Potomac River. She sat on his clothes and refused to budge until he answered her questions—earning her the very first presidential interview conducted by a woman.

3. ...William McKinley wore a carnation every day for luck—and he might have been right to? William McKinley, the twenty-fifth president of the United States, believed red carnations brought good luck, so he wore one in his lapel every day. In 1901, during a meet-and-greet with his political supporters, so the story goes, he offered the carnation he was wearing to a little girl. Only minutes later, he was shot by Leon Czolgosz. He died days later from his wounds.

4. ...Calvin Coolidge had a pet raccoon named Rebecca? Coolidge (our thirtieth president) and his wife, Grace, loved animals. They had, at various times, dogs, cats, birds, and, of course, Rebecca, whom they walked around the White House.

  • Bonus fun fact: They were given twin lion cubs as a gift from the mayor of Johannesburg, whom they called “Budget Bureau” and “Tax Reduction,” some of the most depressing pet names we’ve ever heard.

5. ...the “S” in Harry S. Truman’s name doesn’t stand for anything? It’s just…S. Apparently, when our thirty-third president was born, his parents couldn’t decide which grandfather’s name to use for his middle name—Anderson Shipp Truman or Solomon Young—so they compromised by just making his middle name “S,” which might stand for either “Shipp” or “Solomon.”

  • Bonus fun fact: Truman himself omitted a period after the “S” for much of his life, as “S” is his full middle name and isn’t an abbreviation for anything. But the editors of the Chicago Manual of Style convinced him to include a period, as they felt omitting the period was improper.
