Yes, iMovie is a pretty solid choice if you're new to editing. It's pretty easy to use and the interface is very intuitive. It does have its limitations, though. If you're looking for more freedom and flexibility, it may be worth learning Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere.

How do I get a clip from a movie or video I didn't make yourself?

You have to download/save it on your device, then do these steps as if you made it yourself. If the video you want is on YouTube, read the article about How to Download YouTube Videos for more detailed instructions. If you don't know how to download a video, you can also record your screen while you're watching it, then crop the video. However, most videos are copyrighted, so using parts of them will make it illegal to show your edited movie. (But maybe you can keep it for yourself and/or your friends; check your country's laws.)
